Happy RVT Month!

This month, we’re celebrating our amazing Registered Veterinary Technologists and Technician Assistants (RVTs & RVTAs) the dedicated, compassionate professionals who keep our patients healthy and our clinic running smoothly every single day.

A huge thank you to our incredible team for all that you do and to our wonderful receptionists who stayed at the clinic for an extra hour and a half to make sure the rest of us could celebrate together.

We had such a fun evening out for dinner and exploring Deadmonton a well deserved night of laughs, scares, and team bonding!

And of course, a big shoutout to our owners for supporting and encouraging us to take the time to recognize our amazing RVT/RVTA team.

Fall Deworming Time for Our Equine Friends

As the weather cools and that first killing frost arrives, it’s your cue — it’s bot fly deworming season! 🪰

Bot flies spend the summer laying sticky yellow eggs on your horse’s legs and coat. When your horse licks or scratches, those eggs hatch and the larvae make their way to the stomach — where they can attach to the stomach lining and cause real trouble over winter. 😣

If left untreated, bot fly larvae can lead to:
⚠️ Stomach irritation and ulcers
⚠️ Digestive upset or poor weight maintenance
⚠️ Colic and discomfort
⚠️ Even interference with nutrient absorption

That’s why deworming after the killing frost is so important it helps eliminate those larvae once the adult flies are gone, preventing ongoing irritation and keeping your horse healthy through winter.

👉 At Barr-North Veterinary Services, we recommend:
• A fall deworming specifically targeting bots (this one’s a must!)
• A fecal egg count in the spring to tailor your next deworming plan, (it’s also a good idea to do a fecal count on fall to monitor worm burden in your herd)

And for horses that travel, or share pens, fences, or waterers with travellers it’s also a great time to boost the flu component in their core vaccines. 💉

A little fall care now means a healthier, happier horse all winter long!

Let’s Talk Ears, Itchiness, and how to tell what’s really going on!

Is your pet shaking their head, scratching their ears, or has a funky smell coming from those cute flaps? It could be an ear infection , or in some cases, ear mites!

👉 Ear infections are very common in both dogs and cats, often caused by yeast, bacteria, moisture, or allergies.

👉 Ear mites, on the other hand, are tiny parasites that are much more common in cats — but not impossible for dogs to pick up (especially if they share space with an infected kitty!).

Because the symptoms can look very similar — itching, redness, discharge, or dark debris — the only way to know for sure what’s going on is with an ear swab and microscopic exam. 🔬

Getting the right diagnosis matters! Treating the wrong issue can make things worse or delay healing.

If left untreated, constant scratching and head shaking can cause:
-Ear hematomas (painful blood blisters in the ear flap)
-Hot spots and skin infections from spreading irritation
-Even chronic ear damage over time

So if your pet’s ears are giving them trouble, don’t wait give us a call at Barr-North Veterinary Services! We’ll take a close look, find the cause, and help your pet get back to feeling comfortable and happy again. 💙🐾

🐶Puppy Love + Important Puppy Vaccines!

Nothing melts hearts like a pile of wiggly, happy puppies! But along with all that cuteness comes an important part of keeping your new best friend healthy — their vaccine series! 💉🐾

Here’s a quick guide to your puppy’s DA2PPV vaccine schedule:
🐾 1st shot: 6–8 weeks old
🐾 2nd shot: 3–4 weeks after the first
🐾 3rd shot: 3–4 weeks after the second
Then it’s boosted annually to keep your pup protected!

At that last DA2PPV visit, we also recommend:
✨ Bordetella vaccine — given intranasally the first time and orally for boosters. It’s much easier to wrangle a wiggly puppy than a full-grown dog for this one!
✨ Rabies vaccine also given at this visit. It’s boosted once a year at first, then every 3 years after that.

So while your puppy’s charm will definitely steal the show, their vaccines are the real MVPs keeping them safe and healthy!
Let us know if you have questions about the importance of preventative vaccine measures for your puppy!

🐾 Hey everyone! Just a heads up! 🐾

We’ll be a little short-staffed after 4 PM on October 27th, so if you need to order or pick up prescriptions (large or small animal), please try to order Friday, and try to pick up before 4:00 PM that day.

We’ll still be open just running with a smaller crew later in the day. Thanks so much for your understanding and for helping us keep things running smoothly! 💙🐴🐶🐱
