BIG NEWS for our equine patients at Barr-North Veterinary Services!
We’re excited to announce that we are now offering equine gastric scoping! Dr. Mikayla is looking forward to helping horses get the answers they need and start feeling their best.
Does your horse show signs like:
• Poor performance
• Weight loss
• Attitude changes
• Girthiness
• Intermittent colic
• Poor appetite or picky eating
A gastric scope allows us to directly visualize the stomach and accurately diagnose gastric ulcers and other concerns giving us valuable information in a short period of time. It is a minimal-risk procedure that helps take the guesswork out of treatment planning and allows us to build targeted treatment plans for each individual horse.

Benefits of gastric scoping:
Accurate diagnosis
Targeted treatment plans
Better performance and comfort
Peace of mind for owners

Recheck scopes are especially valuable for monitoring progress and ensuring treatment plans are working effectively. For horses being treated with GastroGard®, rescoping can even help save money if extended treatment is needed, as the medication carries a treatment guarantee.

Call Barr-North Veterinary Services today to book your appointment and ask about our limited-time promotional pricing until the end of August!

Your horse deserves answers and we’re here to help.

Today we celebrate World Veterinary Day

A day to recognize the heart, skill, and dedication behind every part of this profession.
We celebrate bringing new life into the world tiny paws, baby calves, baby foals, and baby kids taking their very first breaths.
We celebrate the compassion and courage it takes to end suffering with dignity and love.
We celebrate the precision of surgery, the routine (but never “routine”) puppy and kitten visits, and the quiet, special moments with our sweet seniors.
We celebrate the Hail Mary cases the ones that shouldn’t work… but somehow do.
We celebrate our team the strength behind it all.
Our doctors
Our RVTs
Our tech assistants
Our receptionists
Our support staff
Our weekend students
We celebrate our colleagues who stand beside us, our clients who trust us, and our patients who remind us every day why this work matters.
We celebrate the chaos.
The unpredictability.
The reality that no two days are ever the same.
And yes, we celebrate the surprise flowers, the shared meals, and the kindness from the best clients in the world.
This work is hard. It’s emotional. It’s unpredictable.
And it is also deeply meaningful.
Today, we celebrate all of it.
Happy World Veterinary Day!

Owners located!

This little guy is causing some problems on the far west part of town. He’s a young intact male who is extremely friendly! He is however, not wise to the ways of the world. He’s been spotted on the highway leaving town and in yards that he is not welcome in.( by two very cat hating dogs. )If you recognize him, please do him a favour by neutering him and keeping him contained or supervise him outside. We unfortunately have no room to take in strays, and do not want to see him hit on the highway. He’s well loved with beautiful fur, clean ears and a full belly.

This week, our hearts are heavy.

We learned of the tragic loss of a veterinarian from southern Alberta. While we did not have the privilege of knowing her personally, the news has sent shockwaves through our clinic and our community. In this profession, we are all connected by a shared purpose, and when one of us is lost, it is felt deeply by many.
We feel the weight of the grief, the sorrow, and the disbelief that her team, family, and loved ones are carrying right now. We cannot imagine what it would be like to lose one of our own teammates people we work beside every day, people we care about deeply, let alone to su***de.
This loss is a heartbreaking reminder that behind every veterinary professional is a human being who may be quietly struggling. Words matter. Kindness matters. Checking in matters.
Somewhere this week, a veterinary team will walk into their clinic and face an empty chair. Patients will still need care, but the space left behind will be undeniable. A family is grieving. Children are going to sleep without their mother. The ripple effects of this loss are immeasurable.
We hope that no one in our community ever feels this alone or this overwhelmed. But if you do, please reach out to a friend, a colleague, a professional. You are not alone, even when it feels that way.
The Not One More Vet (NOMV) movement continues to be an essential voice in our profession, advocating for mental health awareness and support for veterinary teams everywhere. Please take a moment to learn more, support one another, and speak up.

To our colleagues in Airdrie: we are holding you in our thoughts.

We have an exciting update for y’all!

One of our young boys looking for his forever home, is getting trained on a boundary collar. He has taken to it really well! Also he was carefully introduced to some young children, where he was polite and patient.

One of the boys gets to go on an occasional sleepover. This is from his occasional foster mom:

Here are all his good points:
Very sweet and eager to please;
Super quick learner;
Eats his food nicely, no aggression or gobbling like crazy;
House trained;
Walking on a leash is going very well. With gentle corrections, he does not pull;
Walking off leash is going great, but I have only taken him down our road, no other animals seen;
Recall is about 75%, other 25% is all the distractions by all the smells everywhere! ☺️
As long as he can sleep in your bedroom, he sleeps all night;
Can entertain himself with his toys;
Very respectful of my cats- especially of the one that hisses 😜;
Medium energy - we've walked about 4 to 5 miles a day and he is relaxed in the house after that.

Looking for the Right Homes

Barr-North is now accepting applications for two young adult, neutered male, large dogs in need of loving, committed homes.

At this time, we are not posting photos. Our priority is finding adopters who are genuinely focused on giving these dogs the right home. If you’re truly interested, message us, we’re happy to share their handsome faces!

Both dogs:
• Are young and full of potential, but will require time, patience, and consistency to thrive
• Would be great candidates for a boundary collar system
• Have been loving and kind with clinic staff
• Do well with other dogs when properly introduced.
Come from different surrender situations, but we do not anticipate any ongoing health concerns

Because they are still developing and adjusting, they will do best in homes that can offer: Plenty of time, structure, and positive guidance. A patient and understanding environment. A commitment to helping them grow into confident, well adjusted companions

Please note: We do not have children in the clinic setting, so their behavior around kids, is currently unknown.

We care deeply about these boys and want to see them succeed the clinic is no place for them long-term. They love both inside and outside, but would do good as outdoor pets! If you are serious about welcoming a new family member and are willing to invest in their future, we would love to hear from you.

Please message us to apply or learn more.

Let’s find them the homes they truly deserve. 🐶❤️
