You may have heard of a new (to this area) tick borne disease in the news lately- Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF). So far cases in Ontario seem to be clustered around Long Point (coast of Lake Erie) but this is still a new and developing situation.

RMSF is carried by the American Dog Tick in this area, the first tick borne disease that we have recognized these ticks to carry. Until now, our main concern has been with black legged ticks (aka deer ticks) as they are the carriers of Lyme Disease- another disease that can affect both our pets and humans.

As you will see in the article, RMSF can present in a number of different ways. If your dog is feeling unwell it is important to let your veterinarian know if you have been to Long Point or other high tick areas and if there has been any attached ticks that you have removed from your dog (the same goes for humans too- if you have any attached ticks, please contact your human health professional).

Using monthly tick control is important as is checking your pet and yourself after spending time outdoors.

Our emerging concerns about Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) in Long Point, Ontario, have led to a variety of questions from veterinarians and dog

With the return of the cool damp fall weather, we are seeing a significant increase in the cases of leptospirosis.

Leptospirosis (or "lepto") is a bacteria shed in the urine of skunks, raccoons, deer and rodents. Dogs can get it from drinking from puddles, swimming in ponds or from the dew on the grass (licking the dew off their paws after being outside).

The disease affects the kidneys and liver, causing a number of signs- increased thirst and urination, vomiting, loss of appetite and lethargy. In severe cases, lepto can cause death.

The disease can be prevented by vaccination. Contact the clinic to see if your dog is protected.

This infection can be caught by humans as well as by dogs. Learn about the leptospira organism, and how we test, treat and vaccinate against the disease (in dogs, that is).

Ticks can be found in many areas across Canada but they prefer to live in wooded areas, in tall grasses and under leaf litter. They can also be found in urban areas, like city parks and green spaces.
Avoiding tick habitats help reduce the risk of exposure.
Ixodes species (such as the blacklegged tick) prefer moist environments like leaf litter.
Dermacentor species (such as the American dog or wood tick), a hardier tick, can live in drier environments like tall grasses.
