Bananas, citrus, pineapples and tropical plants… all growing right here in Canada as winter approaches! 🌱

Day 156 of our nighttime jungle gander!

While most gardens are winding down for the season, our little Canadian jungle is getting ready for another winter.

Our winter shell is up, the temperatures outside are dropping, and inside the greenhouse everything is still growing away!

From our banana plants and citrus trees to our pineapple and all the other tropicals, it's going to be another interesting winter. We learned a lot last year, and I'm looking forward to seeing how everything does this time around.

Would you ever try growing tropical plants through a Canadian winter?

Until our next gander, happy growing everyone!

Here's something many gardeners don't realize!

Plant roots need oxygen just as much as they need water!

Over time, potting soil can develop a compacted surface, making it harder for water to soak in evenly.

In today's afternoon educational video, I'm showing you how I use a small hand cultivator to gently loosen the top layer of soil without disturbing the roots.

It's important to remember that proper drainage and a well-aerated soil mix are essential for healthy root growth.

Another little gardening tip from our year-round Canadian tropical jungle!

Good morning everyone!! Grab your coffee and let's take a gander!

Today's featured plant is our beautiful White Bird of Paradise!

Did you know these tropical giants can grow over 20 feet tall in their natural environment?

They're native to southern Africa and are famous for their massive, banana-like leaves. They can also produce beautiful white and blue flowers once mature!

We're growing ours right here in our Canadian tropical jungle, where we keep our tropical plants going all year long, even through our Ontario winters!

Have you ever grown a Bird of Paradise?

Good morning from our Canadian tropical jungle! 🌱

Today we're checking in on our Dwarf Cavendish banana plant and all the little pups growing around its base!

Banana plants naturally produce these offshoots, which can eventually become new banana plants.

We've been learning firsthand how to separate them, and it's another reminder that gardening is always a learning experience!

Good evening everyone!

Welcome back to Day 154 of our Nighttime Jungle Check-In!

We had a bit of an adventure in the jungle today!

Our Dwarf Cavendish banana was getting too big for its pot, so it was finally time to give the mother plant a bigger home.

I also decided to try separating a few banana pups for the very first time!

Now, I'll admit, I don't think I managed to take enough of the root system with them, so I'm not entirely sure whether they'll survive.

But that's part of gardening! We're always learning, trying new things and sometimes making mistakes along the way.

The mother plant is now repotted, and we'll be keeping a close eye on those little pups.

Have you ever separated banana pups? How did yours turn out?

Until our next gander, happy growing everyone!

Want to grow plants like us? Well everyone, you might be surprised how easy it is to get started!

You don't need a big greenhouse, a huge backyard or all kinds of expensive equipment.

Canadian Veggie Grower actually started indoors with my daughter Everly, growing a few plants together and learning along the way.

Eventually, that little growing adventure turned into the tropical greenhouse we have today!

In this video, I'm showing you our original grow tent, along with a little throwback footage of what we used to grow inside it.

And guess what? We're putting that very same grow tent back to work this winter to grow vegetables!

Everyone starts somewhere, and you definitely don't need to have everything figured out on day one.

Start small, be patient, learn from your mistakes and enjoy the journey!

What was the very first plant you ever grew?

Until our next gander, happy growing everyone!

Good morning everyone!

Today's Featured Plant is one that brings some beautiful colour into our tropical jungle!

Meet our purple Phalaenopsis orchid, also known as the moth orchid!

One of my favourite things about these plants is how long their flowers can last. Under the right conditions, they can stay in bloom for several weeks or even months!

And despite what some people might think, Phalaenopsis orchids are actually a great choice for beginners.

They enjoy bright, indirect light, good airflow and a chunky orchid bark mix that allows their roots to breathe.

When it comes to watering, I prefer checking the roots and growing medium rather than following a strict schedule.

With proper care, these beauties can even bloom again!

Do you have any orchids growing at home?

Good evening everyone! 🌙🌿

It's only 9°C outside tonight, and November is just around the corner. But inside our Canadian tropical jungle, things are still growing!

Welcome back to Day 153 of our Nighttime Jungle Check-In!

Tonight we're taking another little gander around the greenhouse and checking on a few of our tropicals.

Our Red Kiss Begonia is showing off those beautiful colours, our aloe vera is looking great, and we've even got a pineapple developing right here in Canada!

We're also checking in on our dragon fruit and white Bird of Paradise.

It's pretty amazing to think that while the outdoor gardening season is winding down, we're still enjoying all these tropical plants in our own backyard.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Tuesday!

Until our next gander, happy growing everyone!

Good morning everyone! 🌿

Today's Featured Plant is one that definitely doesn't need flowers to get your attention!

Meet our beautiful Red Kiss Begonia!

I absolutely love the deep red colouring and those dark edges on the leaves. It's amazing how much colour and character a plant can have just from its foliage.

This beauty enjoys bright, indirect light, well-draining soil and a little humidity. Just be careful not to overwater it!

And here's something pretty interesting. Rex Begonias can actually be propagated from their leaves!

Another beautiful addition to our Canadian tropical jungle!

Do you grow any Rex Begonias?

Until our next gander, happy growing everyone!
