This is how horses share intimacy with you. Bonding and shared grooming. This is a blessing to have this relationship with a horse. Some are more giving and some are less. But this is a sign of trust and affection.

We let our hay field go this last year. We had to make a big decision to keep growing hay. Which would have meant plowing & reseeding and a really big investment to have it done as well. Or could we manage to invest differently and buy our hay for the first time in 22/23 years and let the hay field just go natural. By sacrificing the land to rewild these 2 acres, we have already seen an amazing increase in wild animals, birds, Insects and reptiles have already shown an increase as well in less that one season. The long grass gives so many a warm space to winter with commercial fields on all four sides it is a oasis for the wildlife. I can not wait to see what the future brings. We first started off with a a small portion of our seasonal pasture a few years ago. The growth was amazing to watch. We were so excited with the progress that we decided to dedicate more land. Looking forward to what the future brings! I imagine more wildflowers and a butterfly haven for those migrating. So much more to see as the land returns to it’s natural way.

Weedy fields feed more wildlife than most tidy gardens.
Native plants build natural seed banks that carry birds and small mammals through lean seasons.

β€’ A mature ragweed plant can drop thousands of seeds that winter sparrows rely on
β€’ Thistle heads fuel migrating goldfinches during their late-season journey
β€’ Wild sunflowers and coneflowers provide oil-rich seeds birds cache for later
β€’ Dense grasses shelter insects that bluebirds and other insect-eaters feed their young
β€’ Undisturbed soil protects earthworms that robins and thrushes depend on
β€’ β€œWeeds” often function as survival food when other sources disappear

What looks unkept is often a fully stocked pantry for wildlife.

In 2025, nearly 2,600 animals found loving homes β€” that's about 8 animals per day! This is a powerful reflection of what 100 years of caring makes possible. From rescue to adoption, these life-changing moments happened because of the generosity of our donors. Thank you for being part of a legacy that continues to change lives, one animal at a time.

Did you know horses can raise their coats 13 different ways to insulant themselves in the winter months. Some of the best advice I got when I moved here 22 years ago was let your horse grow his coat. Do not shave him or blanket him. Coming from California in March and arriving in Detroit during a blizzard was a shock to all of us! He was blanketed with a hood and neck warmer too that spring, before he grew a coat. But the following fall he adapted and grew a beautiful coat. So ever since I only blanket on the harshest days. Other than that he actually will refuse his blanket. Granted my horses free-roam and have access to great 4 sided shelter when they want it. Now he is 30 years old and still wants to be out in the elements when they are not too bad. Mother Nature knows how to take of its self if given the chance.
