Barney is approaching 5 months in care and we are so grateful to the foster family who took a chance on him!

Having little experience as an indoor dog and frequent messes at the shelter, it was difficult to find someone willing to take him on.

What we've learned so far?
✔️ Good with the dogs in his home
✔️ Cuddly
✔️ Walks great on leash
✔️ Potty trained
✔️ Loves to play

Barney is more than ready to find his new home! His only restriction is no cats.

As Spring starts, we are getting more and more phone calls about red bites on your dogs stomach. We wanted to give everyone this information, these are a type of fly bite, and dogs generally get them from laying in the grass. They look terrible, but usually do not bother the dogs. They heal quickly on their own, and do not require any treatment. These flies are usually around for a few weeks every spring and then go away. We hope this eases any worry that you may have had about your own dog!

Backyard breeding is prevalent in the Pembina Valley and Barney is a prime example of the poor treatment many of these dogs receive. We were contacted about Barney after a concerned individual saw an ad for him online. They were worried about how he was being treated and decided to pick him up. They realized right away he needed more help then they could give and reached out.

What exactly are Backyard Breeders? They are people who breed and sell dogs for profit. They place little regard on their health, temperament and socialization. The parents (like Barney) are often kept in kennels, outdoors, with little exercise and interaction with people. They sell dogs and puppies to whoever enquires, without regard for who they end up with.

The next time you are thinking about purchasing a dog online, we encourage you to ask some hard questions and think about the breeder you are supporting. Or take a look at the hundred of dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues.

We have a very special ask for a senior dog named Layla. Layla is just shy of her 11th birthday. She's a big girl (100lb+) that just wants affection and a great nap!

Layla has multiple masses in all but one of her mammary glands. To remove the mammary chain, Layla would be looking at two invasive procedures with a lengthy recovery time. Due to many factors and keeping in mind Layla's comfort, we will not be proceeding with surgery at this time. We are seeking a foster to care for Layla during what may be her final weeks or months. The best foster would be one without other dogs.

Layla is an easy going girl. She spends most of her days sleeping or asking for pets, but still enjoys a little run in the yard. She is quite overweight and will need help to keep her weight down.

If you are interested in fostering Layla please send us a PM and we will get you a foster application. A foster that is closer to our area would be most suitable for veterinary care, however we will consider Winnipeg fosters based on availability!
