Eight years as a registered charity, and what a ride it has been. 💙

When we officially became a registered Canadian charity in August 2018, we already had animals here, muddy boots by the door, feed to prepare, and a pretty good idea that our lives had changed for good.

Since then, so many animals have come through our gates and become part of the Herd. We’ve watched tiny babies grow up, older animals settle into retirement, special-needs animals figure out their own way of doing things, and friendships form that still make us smile.

There have also been a lot of very full days in between. Hay to stack. Pens to clean. Vet appointments. Volunteers pulling in. Tours heading through the gates. Pigs yelling about breakfast.

And somehow, eight years later, here we are.

We are so grateful to everyone who has donated, sponsored, volunteered, visited, shared our posts, or simply kept cheering the Herd on from afar.

You’ve helped make this place home for so many animals, and that is something worth celebrating. 🏡💙

Pig yoga is one of our favourite summer traditions at The Happy Herd. 🐷

Neda has been teaching yoga here for the past four years, but her connection to the Herd started before that. She used to spend her birthdays visiting us, and the first pig she ever met was right here at the sanctuary.

Now she gets to watch other people have that same experience. We roll out the mats, the pigs wander over to see what’s going on, and there’s usually a goat or two watching nearby.

It’s a pretty special way to spend time with animals many of us don’t often get to know up close.

Best of all, every Pig Yoga ticket helps us care for the rescued animals who call The Happy Herd home. Thank you to Neda and everyone who joins us each summer. 🐽💙

Did you know what happens after we take in a rescued animal? 🐮

Getting them through the gate is only one part of the story. Sometimes there are vet visits, medication, physiotherapy, wheelchairs, special food, or just a lot of time and patience while we figure out what that animal needs.

Then there is the everyday care: feed, bedding, cleaning, maintenance, appointments, and keeping a close eye on everyone as they get older.

We also know that sanctuary life includes some very hard goodbyes. Many of our animals grow old here, and when we lose one, we feel it deeply. We still try to help other rescues when we can too, whether that means sharing food, supplies, or practical support.

Part of why we share so much from the farm is to show what this life really looks like. Social media catches the zoomies, funny faces, and pig yoga, but there is a lot happening between those moments.

We are very lucky to have volunteers, sponsors, donors, visitors, and so many people cheering the Herd on. We simply could not give these animals lifelong care without that support, and we are so grateful for it. 💙

Snoot Saturday with Willow. 🐐

She’s come over to check on the hay situation, although that little look suggests she may have been hoping we had something better tucked away.

Willow has been part of our Herd since 2018, and she’s still as sweet and curious as ever. We’re always happy to see this familiar snoot coming our way.

We didn’t set out to build a sanctuary. 💙

In 2012, we brought home Desi, a one-week-old calf from an auction. We had room for him, but we had no idea how much room he would take up in our lives. 🐄

Desi was the beginning of everything that followed.

Over the next few weeks, we’re sharing more of the story behind The Happy Herd Farm Sanctuary in Langley, BC: how we began, the animals who shaped us, and what it takes to keep the sanctuary going today.
