Hendrixia & Susie Q have the right idea — a sunny lounge session up front while their moms snack on alfalfa in the background.
Here’s something you might not know about crias:
✨They’re usually born weighing between 14–20 pounds and can double their weight within the first month.
✨Their fleece is extra fine compared to adults, which is why it feels so incredibly soft in those first months.
✨Crias don’t spit like adults do — they have to learn that behavior as they get older from the herd.
Every day they’re growing stronger, fluffier, and more curious, and we’re loving every minute of it.

Happy Labour Day!
Today we’re taking a little break and soaking up the day with our animals and farm family. The gates will be closed, but the farm is still full of love, laughter, and plenty of furry (and feathered!) company.
We hope you enjoy this well-deserved day of rest and celebration with your loved ones. We’ll see you back at the farm on Friday ✨

It’s hatch day!
We usually keep 2–3 different groups of chickens separate from our rainbow egg layers for breeding and hatching, but right now we’re down to just one: our Polish.
Over the past while we’ve been working on a fun little breeding project we call our candy corn Polish. The idea is to cross buff laced and silver laced Polish, blending their striking colors into something completely new. The hope is to hatch out chicks with mottled feathers of gold, brown, and white—almost like the sweet stripes of a candy corn.
Today is the big day to see what pops out of those shells ✨

Have you been wondering where Burrito the donkey, Rupert the donkey, or Geraldine the ostrich are?
The truth is our donkeys have gotten a little too round for their own good. When donkeys carry extra weight, it puts them at risk for serious health issues like laminitis and metabolic problems. Unlike horses, donkeys process food differently and need more careful management when it comes to diet. That’s why Burrito and Rupert have been taken off grass and moved into a pen at the back of the farm near Jethro the camel, where they can slim down safely and stay healthy.
But don’t worry — this doesn’t mean your visit will be donkey-less. Barney the rescue emu has stepped into Geraldine’s spot and is quickly becoming a star in his own right. He’s social, loveable, and always excited to see visitors (and the grain buckets, just like the alpacas).
With so many animals and such a variety of species, we sometimes move them around — not to hide them, but to make sure each one has the very best care possible. We’re an animal-first farm, and your experience matters too. If you’re ever curious about a particular animal during your visit, just ask — we’re always happy to share where they are and how they’re doing.
We’re open today from 10–4 — come by, say hello, and meet some of the farm’s new front-and-centre faces ✨

Duck eggs are back in stock — but in limited quantities only!
Larger than chicken eggs with rich yolks and extra protein, they’re a favorite for both baking and everyday eating. Their creamy flavor and nutritional boost make them worth the wait, but they won’t last long.
Come grab a dozen while you can ✨ we are open today from 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm, stop by and say hi!

Here’s a little flashback to when Geraldine was just starting to fill in her tiny “chicken wings” and learning to show them off like the star she is. Even back then, you could tell she was destined for center stage — every strut, every flap, every dramatic twirl screamed prima ballerina ✨
Fun fact: while ostriches can’t fly, their wings are far from useless. They use them for balance when running at top speeds (up to 70 km/h!) and for communication — flaring them out to look bigger, to impress, or just to show a little attitude. And Geraldine has always had plenty of that.

When llamas and alpacas feel truly comfortable, they show it in the sweetest ways — gentle nuzzles, soft kisses, and leaning in close. Affection from these animals isn’t given lightly; it’s earned through patience, trust, and care.
Molé is the perfect example. He came to us as a rescue, a little unsure of his new home at first. But with time, kindness, and plenty of love, he’s blossomed into one of the most affectionate animals on the farm. He is always the first in line for a kiss — especially from Farmer D.
Moments like these are why we love what we do!

It’s Hump Day, and our boys are letting us know summer is winding down! You can always tell when rut season is just around the corner—our camels start peeing on their own legs, their ear glands kick into overdrive with oil, and the slobber is nonstop. And of course, they’re eager to show off their dullah—that’s the big inflatable sac in their mouth that makes them look like they’re blowing a giant pink balloon. It’s all part of camel courtship behavior, and a sure sign rut season is on the horizon.
Who needs Wednesday motivation when you’ve got front-row seats to the most fascinating biology lesson on the farm ✨

Catherine Simpson established Kensington Prairie Farm in 2000 on five acres of land in Surrey, BC in an area historically known as Kensington Prairie County. Home to 12 alpacas, the farm quickly grew to 30+ animals and in 2006, Kensington Prairie Farm relocated to Langley, BC and expanded its operations from 5 to 45 acres.
Kensington Prairie Farm is now a diversified farming operation. In addition to breeding, raising and showing Huacaya alpacas, we also market and sell a variety of high-quality Canadian made and imported alpaca products from our on-farm Boutique and online store (please see www.kensingtonprairie.ca). Kensington Prairie Farm also raises registered Polled Hereford cattle and produces artisanal honey. KPFarm Custom Agricultural Services produces high quality hay and silage and offers custom forage production services to area farmers. Naturally raised, hormone free beef and alpaca meat is also available for sale through the on-farm boutique.
Kensington Prairie Farm is a member of the Canadian Llama and Alpaca Association (CLAA), Alpaca Canada (AC), Fraser Valley Llama & Alpaca Association (FVLAC), BC Llama & Alpaca Association (BCLAA) and Alpaca Registry Inc. (ARI). We are also members of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, BC Cattlemen’s Association and West Coast Hereford Club.
Catherine represents the four provincial Farm Animal Care Councils (BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario) on the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) and currently sits on the NFACC Executive. She is also a board membr of the Fraser Valley Farm Direct Marketing Association, Fraser Valley Llama and Alpaca Club and West Coast Hereford Club.
Kensington Prairie Farm is an active member of several local marketing associations including Langley Circle Farm Tour (www.circlefarmtour.com), Fraser Valley Farm Direct Marketing Association (www.bcfarmfresh.com), and Shop Historic 248th Trail Group (www.shophistoricotter248thtrail.com).
Kensington Prairie Farm donates all proceeds from group farm tours to Quechua Benefit, a charity providing services to the poorest Quechua alpaca breeders in Peru. Quechua Benefit not only operates a Children’s Village near Chivy, Peru (Casa Chapi Children’s Village), but also conducts annual medical and dental missions to a largely forgotten people living in remote areas of the Peruvian highlands (www.quechuabenefit.org). When possible, Catherine volunteers for these annual missions in Peru.
