Lots of people find dogs on the street who are dirty and appear abandoned, so they take them home and try to find them new owners. No one knows if the gate blew open and the dog has been lost for weeks, which is why they look so bad, if the dog was lost by a dog walker- couldn't find their way home- and has been on their own for a bit, or if the dog was stolen and then got away from the thief. It's unfair to rehome a dog without searching for the owners, who will likely be checking the shelter for their lost pet.

What do you do if you find a dog?

• Take them to be scanned for a microchip (with a universal scanner that looks for all brands of chips).
• Post to PawBoost.com
• Check Craigslist Lost/Found ads
• Post on lost.PetcoLove.org
• Post on Nextdoor.com
• Post on the Lost and Found Pet page for that city
• Hang FOUND flyers on every intersection as far as you can with a BIG picture, age, description, phone number
• Take the animal to the shelter near where it was found, because the owner will likely look there. Get the animal's impound number and you can then track them at the shelter.
