You’re going to love this: sea otter moms basically make baby blankets out of kelp.

A pup is born floating, fluffy, and so light it can’t dive. That’s adorable - and risky.

So when mom needs to hunt, she tucks her little one into the kelp canopy like a crib. The long ribbons hold the pup in place, bobbing safely on the surface.

She slips beneath the water to find crabs and clams. Above, the pup squeaks and naps, rocking with the tide.

Mom pops back up, checks the bundle, and gets right to work grooming. Clean fur is life for an otter. It traps air and keeps a baby warm.

Sometimes you can see a whole raft resting in the kelp, moms and pups side by side. It looks peaceful. It’s also smart. Kelp is a lifeline.

These moms are tiny, tough heroes. They carry, clean, teach, and feed around the clock. And when the ocean gets rough, the kelp blanket keeps hope from drifting away.
