We want to thank the Bunting family of Longpond farm in Clarendon for spending the time with us and sharing the knowledge with the next generation. Aquaculture faces a generational and education gap in Jamaica, and we hope to change that with the Youth in Caribbean Aquaculture next Gen

We caught our YCA Jamaica 2026 cohort off guard on camera to find out their thoughts on the experience of visiting a 300-acre tilapia farm. We captured Bthany's answer in another reel☺️

We chose marine science and science graduates for our very first YCA cohort—and honestly, it just made sense 💙🌊

Right now, there’s no formal aquaculture curriculum in our Jamaican institutions. But what we do have are bright, passionate graduates who already understand the ocean—how it works, how it’s changing, and why it matters.

So instead of waiting for a system to be built… we started with them.

Aquaculture is a natural next step: 🌱 Taking what they know about marine ecosystems and applying it to food production
🐟 Learning how to farm fish, seaweed, and shellfish sustainably
🌍 Creating solutions for food security and climate change
💡 Discovering new career paths you may have never considered

This is about exposure and opening doors.
From studying the ocean… to working with it.
From learning science… to applying it in real, impactful ways.

Our graduates are stepping into something new—and helping us build the future of aquaculture in the Caribbean, one cohort at a time.

🇯🇲🌊 Launching in Jamaica!
We are excited to announce that Youth in Caribbean Aquaculture (YCA) is starting in Jamaica — bringing together young scientists, students, and ocean innovators who are passionate about sustainable seafood, marine science, and the future of Caribbean food systems.

Our mission is to bridge the gap between science and real-world aquaculture, giving youth the opportunity to visit farms, meet producers, and explore careers in the blue economy.

🐟 Through this program, young scientists will: • Visit aquaculture farms
• Learn directly from farmers and researchers
• Explore careers in marine science and food production
• Help build the future of sustainable seafood in the Caribbean
📩 Interested in joining us? Send us a DM.

🚐 We are also looking for sponsors to help with transportation for youth to visit farms across Jamaica.

If your company would like to support the next generation of marine scientists, send us a DM to get involved.

A message from the Founder of the Caribbean Aquaculture Education and Innovation Hub

The theme of International Women’s Day 2026 reminds us that progress happens when women support, uplift, and invest in one another. One of the most meaningful ways we can do this is through mentorship—giving our time, sharing our experiences, and opening doors for the next generation.

Each of us carries knowledge shaped by our journeys. By sharing that knowledge with young women and girls who are curious about science, leadership, and aquaculture, we help create a future where they will not have to search for visibility—they will already see themselves represented.

As continues to grow, mentorship will remain at the heart of our mission. By connecting experienced women in aquaculture with students and young professionals, we aim to build confidence, share knowledge, and create pathways into this important field.

Through guidance, encouragement, and shared experience, we hope to inspire the next generation of Caribbean women and girls to see aquaculture not only as a career, but as a space where their voices, leadership, and innovation truly belong. 🌊🌱

For women's month Dr. Juli-Anne will showcase the sisterhood of Caribbean women and women in Aquaculture that she has met since 2022 and the founding of Women in Caribbean Aquaculture.

Living in Italy she met up with Makeba .felix from Saint Lucia who is currently studying for her Masters degree in Ireland. A plane and train trip away they met up in Napoli for a few hours.
