Heartworm diagnosis, treatment, and prevention
- by Nassau Pet Clinic. 337-0338.

Heartworm is a serious and potentially fatal mosquito-borne disease that affects the heart and arteries within dogs and, less commonly, cats.

Symptoms may not show up until six months after the initial infection when the heartworms grow larger and occupy more space inside the dog’s heart and arteries.

The first thing you may notice is your pet coughing. It may not be able to tolerate exercise as it once did and the coughing will be worse after walks or other forms of exercise.

A severe untreated infection will eventually lead to congestive heart failure and then death.

Heartworm is transmitted by at least 10 to 15 species of mosquitoes and is quite common in the Bahamas with the risk of infection higher during the rainy summer months as the mosquito numbers are much higher when they have an increase in standing water in which they can breed.

All dogs within the Bahamas should be considered at risk of contracting heartworm if they are not on a preventative regimen.

Prevention of heartworm is most effectively done with a monthly dosage of medication such as HEARTGARD® which contains the active ingredients Ivermectin and pyrantel.

Tests for the presence of heartworm can be performed through Microfilaria and Antigen Testing by a Veterinarian.

In patients with advanced forms of the disease – in which the heartworms are numerous or have been allowed to grow to a large size – the treatment of the disease is challenging.

Prevention is certainly easier than treatment so we urge everyone to ensure their dogs are receiving monthly doses of HEARTGARD – available at the Nassau Pet Clinic - or other heartworm medications.

For pets exhibiting symptoms of an active heartworm infection – such as coughing after exercise - please contact Dr. Dorsett at the Nassau Pet Clinic at 337-0338.
