Be honest… 👀

When was the last time your pet had a dental cleaning?

If their breath can:
❌ Clear a room
❌ Knock you backwards
❌ Smell like “mystery fish from 2019”

…it’s time 😅

Dental disease affects 8 out of 10 pets over age 3, and most owners don’t even realize it’s happening. Bad breath isn’t normal — it’s a sign of bacteria and infection under the gumline.

The good news? It’s preventable.

Why Dental Cleanings Matter for Your Pet 🐾

Regular dental cleanings are more than just fresh breath — they are essential for your pet’s overall health. Plaque and tartar buildup can lead to painful gum disease, tooth loss, and serious infections that may spread to vital organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys. Professional cleanings help prevent disease, reduce inflammation, eliminate hidden bacteria, and keep your pet comfortable and eating normally.

A healthy mouth means a healthier, happier, longer life for your pet! 💙🐶🐱

🚨 VET TRUTH: By the time your pet stops eating, the problem is often advanced.

A loss of appetite is not usually the first sign that something is wrong, it’s often one of the last. Many pets continue eating even while dealing with pain, infections, dental disease, organ problems, or internal illness.

Because animals instinctively hide discomfort, early warning signs are often subtle. Changes in energy, behavior, sleeping patterns, or routine may be the only clues you get before appetite is affected.

Waiting until your pet refuses food can mean more pain for them and more complex, costly treatment later.

If something feels “off,” trust your instincts.

📞 Call 242-352-8155 to schedule an exam at Freeport Veterinary Hospital and catch problems early — before they become emergencies.

Don’t Let “Garbage Gut” Get Your Dog! 🐶💥

Hey Fam! We know it’s tempting to give your pooch some of your plate maybe a lil’ curry chicken, some KFC, or even a slice of cake. But beware! Feeding dogs table food can cause “garbage gut”, that nasty upset tummy that comes with diarrhea, vomiting, and sometimes serious tummy trouble. 😬

When dogs eat human food:
🍗 Too much fat = pancreatitis (painful, dangerous!)
🌶️ Spices & seasoning = stomach irritation (vomiting, diarrhea)
🍫 Chocolate, onions, garlic = toxic, can even be life-threatening

Your dog might beg for scraps, but their bodies aren’t built for our Bahamian feast. Stick to their regular dog food and treats, they’ll stay healthy, happy, and full of energy for all the running on the beach! 🐾☀️

🐾 Why Is My Pet Scooting? It’s Not Just a Funny Habit—It’s a Sign Something’s Wrong! 🐾

Have you noticed your dog or cat dragging their rear end along the floor? 😬 While it might seem silly or even make you laugh, scooting is usually your pet's way of saying: "Help me, I’m uncomfortable!"

One of the most common causes of scooting is an issue with the a**l glands—a topic many pet parents aren’t familiar with.

👉 So, what are a**l glands?
A**l glands (also called a**l sacs) are two small scent glands located just inside your pet’s re**um. These glands naturally empty a small amount of fluid when your pet poops—it's part of how they mark territory. But sometimes, especially in small dogs or those with soft stool, the glands don’t empty properly. This can lead to buildup, impaction, or even infection—and that’s when your pet starts scooting in an effort to relieve the pressure.

But a**l glands aren't the only reason your pet might be scooting! Other common causes include:

🔸 Worms or other parasites – Especially tapeworms
🔸 Allergies – From food or environmental triggers
🔸 Skin infections or irritation – Around the rear
🔸 Matted fur or debris – Like grass or hair stuck near the area

📞 If your pet is scooting frequently, licking excessively back there, or seems uncomfortable, it’s time for a visit! We can safely express a**l glands, check for parasites, and provide treatment so your pet can feel better fast.

🩺 No more itching. No more scooting. Just a happy, comfy pet.

🐶💔 Let’s Talk About a Tough but Important Topic: Where Did Your Puppy Come From? 💔🐶

We know it’s not always easy to hear, but it’s something every current and future pet owner needs to understand. Many puppies sold online, come from backyard breeders.

These breeding operations often prioritize profit over the well-being of animals. That can mean:

- Puppies kept in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions
- Little to no veterinary care
- No socialization or early handling
- Serious long-term genetic, behavioral, and medical problems

As veterinary professionals, we see the heartbreaking consequences all the time; puppies that are sick, under socialized, or suffering from conditions that could have been prevented with responsible breeding practices. And sadly, many new owners are left emotionally and financially overwhelmed.

We’re not here to judge. Many people buy from these sources without knowing the truth. The problem is often hidden behind cute photos and fast sales.

❤️ Here’s how you can help break the cycle:

1. Always ask to meet the breeder in person and see where the puppies are raised.
2. Ask to meet the puppy’s parents — especially the mom.
3. Request health clearances, vaccination records, and deworming history.
4. Be cautious of sellers who won’t answer questions or rush you into buying.

🚨 Puppies from backyard breeders may look cute at first glance, but the risks are real, and the impact on animal welfare is enormous.

That said, there are reputable breeders who genuinely care deeply about the health and well-being of their puppies. These breeders invest time and resources into proper veterinary care, early socialization, and responsible breeding practices to ensure puppies go to loving homes healthy and happy.
Supporting these responsible breeders helps improve the future of pet ownership and ensures that every puppy has the best possible start in life.

Let’s raise awareness, support responsible breeding, and protect the pets we love. Because real love means doing what’s right, even when it’s hard.

🎆 PET SAFETY ALERT: FIREWORKS & FURRY FRIENDS 🇺🇸🇧🇸

As we gear up to celebrate U.S. Independence Day on July 4th and Bahamas Independence Day on July 10th, let’s not forget the ones who don’t enjoy fireworks—our pets.

While fireworks light up the skies for us, for dogs and cats, the loud noises, bright lights, and unfamiliar smells can trigger extreme anxiety and fear. Every year, shelters report a spike in lost pets during the week of fireworks because frightened animals often panic and escape.

Here are some must-know tips to protect your pets this holiday season:

🐾 Keep Them Indoors: Even if your pet is usually fine outside, loud bangs can cause unpredictable behavior.
🐾 Create a Comfort Zone: Set up a cozy, quiet area with their favorite blanket or toy where they can feel safe.
🐾 Mask the Noise: Use calming music, white noise machines, or keep the TV on to help block out the sound of fireworks.
🐾 Double Check ID Tags & Microchips: Make sure your pet’s identification is up to date, just in case they run.
🐾 Talk to Your Vet: If your pet has severe anxiety, ask us about calming products, pheromone sprays, or safe anxiety medications.
🐾 Walk Early: Walk dogs before it gets dark—well before any fireworks start.

✨ Celebrations should be fun for the whole family—including the four-legged members. Let’s make this a safe and stress-free Independence week for our pets!

🐾👑 Happy Cat World Domination Day! 👑🐾

Yes, it’s a real holiday—though honestly, cats think every day is about them. 😼

Today we officially honor our feline overlords, who have spent centuries pretending to be cuddly while secretly plotting to take over the world… one laser pointer at a time. 😹

Let’s face it:

- They sleep 18 hours a day and still act like we're the lazy ones.

- They knock things off counters just to assert dominance.

- They mysteriously appear every time you open a can of tuna.

- And they’ve mastered the art of mind control with just one slow blink. 🐈‍⬛✨

Whether you serve your cat like royalty or merely exist to refill the kibble bowl, today we celebrate the true rulers of our homes (and hearts 💖).

✈️ Travelling With Your Pet? Here’s What You Need to Know! 🐶🐱
If you're planning a trip to the U.S. and want to take your pet with you, here’s a quick guide to make sure things go smoothly:

🇺🇸 Heading to the U.S. with Your Pet:

To get a Health Certificate for travel, your pet must be healthy and up to date on all vaccinations—especially rabies.
If your pet isn’t current, no worries! They’ll just need an annual exam to asses their health and so that we can safely update their shots before they go.

👉 Also, dogs heading to the U.S. must:
- Be at least 6 months old
- Have a microchip
- And complete the CDC’s Dog Import Form before travel

🇧🇸 Returning to The Bahamas:

This part catches a lot of people off guard—you need to apply for an import permit from BAHFSA before you leave The Bahamas.
It takes 5–7 business days to process, so planning ahead is key.
Without this permit, your pet won’t be allowed back in when you return.

✅ You’ll also need to make sure your pet’s rabies vaccine is within the accepted timeframe, and that they’ve had recent deworming and flea/tick treatment, along with a vet-issued health certificate within 48 hours of travel.

📅 Our advice: Let us know as soon as you’re thinking about traveling so we can help you get everything sorted in time—no last-minute surprises!

Feel free to call or message us if you’re not sure where to start. We’re happy to walk you through the process! 💼🐾
