📣Did you know?

Shorebird populations are experiencing a global crisis, with 34% of species now of conservation concern as of 2024, up from 12% in 1988. Key threats include habitat loss/degradation, climate change, disturbance, and hunting. Many migratory species are in severe decline due to losing crucial coastal stopover areas.

What is a shorebird? Shorebirds are a diverse group of over 200 species that rely on water for eating, nesting, and resting, often near beaches or rocky areas.

Grand Bahama is home to a number of species of shorebirds - some year-round and some just passing through on their spring and fall migratory routes when they stop over here to rest and refuel for their long journeys.

Some local shorebirds actually nest in the sand and others nest in grasses near the water.

We are in the midst of the spring migration and nesting season, which is a great time to see these birds, but also a time they are at their most vulnerable.

If you take your dog to the beach, please make sure they're on leash at all times and if you see a nest or bird, please take your dog the other direction! Same goes for curious kids - by all means, encourage them to enjoy observing birds but at a respectful distance only!

If you see a bird that you think may be injured but you don't see any visible injuries, please give it a little time; sometimes they're just exhausted and need time to rest. If you're unsure what to do please feel free to call us at 727.2477 for advice or send us a photo via WhatsApp.

Let's all do our part to protect these incredible creatures!
