🦉 We present to you an owl that was entrusted to us after having received a shock. When he arrived, he had a very swollen eye and could not fly.

🩺🩼 After examination by veterinarians and a few weeks of convalescence, we were able to have him hunt chicks, check that he could fly properly and release him into the Amazon forest.

🥳 We wish him a beautiful and long life around the Cruz Verde center!

🐒 Our second little howler : Oriana.
She arrived quite young (around 5/6 months old) at Cruz Verde. She was living in the wild before. Unfortunately, her mother was probably killed by poachers when she was a baby.

When she arrived at the center, Oriana was called Orion because we thought it was a boy.
🤼‍♂️ Indeed, in addition to her rather elongated cl****is which was mistaken for a p***s, she shows dominance traits such as biting volunteers when she was not happy or stealing food from Romeo's hands!

🌿🥭 Since the beginning and even more since contact was cut, she tries to explore on her own, eat leaves in the trees and almost never comes back down to the ground. A perfect little monkey in short!

🦧 Here is Freya, one of the new female baby howler monkeys!
She has long and fluffy fur that looks like a mane.

🤱 She remains a baby for the moment and is still looking for human contact. She seems a little depressed, perhaps due to the life she lived before arriving and the fact of losing her mother

🌳 Despite this, she spends a lot of time with Romeo, Luna and Oriana in the trees

Our role now is to gradually make her detach herself from us and spend more time with her monkey companions as well as to make her understand that she must go through the trees and not the ground to move around.

💤 She is quite lazy on this point and tries by all means to sneak up on the volunteers to be carried instead of following the others in the trees

🍽 The important thing is that for the moment she eats well, learns to taste the leaves in the trees to be able to then join our almost wild group of howler monkeys !

🌳 Romeo was living in the wild before arriving at La Cruz Verder. Unfortunately, his mother was killed by poachers when he was a baby. He was actually also hurt by the bullet that shot his mom and has a scar on his left arm from it.

🎉 He is a feisty howler monkey that arrived at the center at two months old.
He loves to climb in trees and explore the jungle. As all babies, he sometimes throws mystery tantrums where he can get quite agitated and a bit bitey.
🌱 He usually calms down on walks where he gets very curious of the jungle and its many tasty leaves.

🦍 For now, he is the only male of our 4 babies howlers and assume more and more this role by been protective and challenging toward men volunteers !

Life in the jungle also means having great encounters !

A source of fear for some or wonder for others, our little animals that swarm, crawl and climb everywhere are part of our daily lives 🥰

🕷 "Little" tarantulas in the kitchen? No problem!
🐍 A snake that sneaks along the jungle paths? We say hello
🐸 Frog in the sink? We'll do the dishes later..
🦂 A scorpion in the bed? Well, we'll gently put it back under a rock, there are limits to privacy!

But in any case, living with these animals also teaches us to respect them: we are in their home and their presence is part of our ecosystem.

They all play a role, whether it's regulating their prey or being a link in the food chain, let's take an interest in them and (most of the time) they won't hurt us. 😇

After showing you the progress of our first group of howler monkeys, it's the turn of our group of capuchins !

🐒🐒🐒 Arrived a little less than a year ago at the center, our first 3 capuchins (Loki, Hati and Tyson) are still doing wonderfully and are now joined by 2 larger capuchins and another very young one (we'll introduce them to you soon 😉).

🍼🍌 And in one year, our little monsters have grown up! Feeding mainly on milk when they arrived, they now devour seeds, fruits, leaves and nuts.
🌳 They spend most of their time in the trees or playing with each other whereas when they arrived they were stuck to us. And finally, their cage remains permanently open now so that they can sleep outside!

The goal, a bit like for howler monkeys, is to make them autonomous quickly by gradually cutting off contact and leaving them as much as possible in natural conditions

🕙 For the moment, the group only includes very young or young individuals and reintroducing them is a long-term goal because some must be big enough to defend the others if we want them to survive in the wild. Another option would be for them to be accepted into the wild group that turn around the center. We'll keep you updated 😃

🦝 Here's Shanti, our Coati !

Shanti arrived at the center at approximately three months. A member of the community decide to give her to us so she could live here a good life.

She is very independent but loves to come say hi to volunteers during the day. She also loves her time playing with the capucino monkeys.

🐗 She had a sweet ‘frenemy’ bond with Kore, sometimes being super sweet and sometimes hard playing.

🍽 She is often away in the jungle looking for food (very good at it).

You can see how much she grew up in only a few month !! We might soon say goodbye to her as she go back in the jungle 🌱👋
