The Bahrain team hosted Jess Wilson, a final year vet student and the winner of the 2024 Baker McVeigh Travel Bursary.

Jess spent two weeks working alongside our vets, gaining hands-on experience in Thoroughbred racing, including on-track duties during race meetings and getting to know the demands of these equine athletes on a day to day basis.

We were delighted to host Jess in Bahrain and support her development as she builds her career in equine practice. We will look forward to seeing where her passion takes her.

We congratulate Dr Azeem Haider on successfully completing his exams to become a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS) recently.
Azeem started his journey with Baker McVeigh in 2021 when he joined our team in Bahrain. It has been great to see him grow in stature and many Bahraini trainers and horse owners consider him the ‘go to’ guy for all their equine veterinary needs. 👏

BMI Student Travel Bursary — Hardie Bryce “I spent two months as an extern at the Baker McVeigh Johannesburg practice, where I learned from skilled sport and racehorse vets and gained real insight into the role of the junior associates. The varied caseload—especially the lameness work—offered invaluable experience, and with the team’s support I was able to significantly develop my diagnostic imaging skills for both lameness investigations and pre-purchase examinations. A standout highlight was taking part in a gelding campaign clinic in rural KZN, which allowed me to build surgical confidence, meet the Cape Town and Summerveld teams, and make a difference. Outside of the practice, I enjoyed exploring the area, joining plenty of Parkruns, and getting to know the team through dinners, braais, and social events. I ended my time in South Africa with two weeks volunteering on the Munywana Conservancy in KZN, where I worked with the ecological team and lots of amazing wild animals. Overall, I owe a big thank you to Baker McVeigh International for such an incredible opportunity.”

Platelet-rich plasma for the treatment of inflammatory airway disease - Recent advancements in the use and study of biological anti-inflammatory products have shown promising results for the treatment of airway disease in horses.
The intrabronchial installation of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), via nebulizer, into the airways of horses affected by chronic inflammatory airway disease (IAD) has been proven to decrease the severity of airway inflammation and increase lung function.
The use of intrabronchial PRP is proving to be a promising adjunct in the treatment of IAD in horses competing in all disciplines.

Earlier this week, James Boardman attended the annual casualty management seminar hosted by the Association of Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (ARVS) at Aintree Racecourse.

James Boardman gave a practical demonstration on how to apply temporary immobilisation for horses injured on the racecourse. During the seminar, he showcased the use of adjustable splints, compression boots and flexion splints to vets who provide racecourse cover.

The seminar brought together racecourse vets from across the country to share knowledge and implement best practice of management of equine injuries and emergencies on racecourses.

ARVS has been instrumental in improving the standard of veterinary care and welfare of horses on UK racecourses. The seminars provide an important opportunity for discussion and collaboration of ideas with racecourse vets.

The demonstration horses were kindly provided by

Aural Plaques in Horses

Aural plaques are benign, raised white patches found on the inside of a horse’s ears. They’re thought to be caused by a papillomavirus, often spread by biting flies.

Most horses show no discomfort, though some may become sensitive around the ears. Because treatment can increase head shyness, plaques are usually left untreated unless they cause irritation.

Prevention tip: Minimise fly exposure with fly masks, sprays, and stabling during peak fly activity to reduce new plaque formation.

British Horse Society & British Equine Veterinary Association Trust Welfare Day

Emily Wall from Baker McVeigh Lambourn and Brian Abbott from Baker McVeigh Yorkshire volunteered their time to support this incredible initiative — carrying out microchipping, passporting, and castrations, with help from student Paddy Barlow.

Alongside a brilliant team of vets from five practices, 52 horses were seen to and cared for throughout the day — a fantastic effort all round!

We’re so proud to be part of such a meaningful initiative, supporting equine welfare and making a real difference in the community.
