PUG DOGS TL MYELOPATHIES WITH ARTICULAR FACET DYSPLASIA
Great paper published by our friend Anna Tauro & colleagues in Frontiers surgical outcomes in pug dogs with articular facet dysplasia-associated TL myelopathies. Long-term surgical outcome data were until now lacking. A total of 7 dogs were included with lesions classified as IVDP, pia-arachnoid fibrosis (PAF) and SAD. All dogs underwent vertebral stabilisation. Decompression was performed in IVDP and SAD cases. Short-term improvement was documented in 5/7 dogs. 57% of owners perceived long-term benefit with surgery. Recurrence occurred in 4/5 improved cases with median time of 8.9 months. Worst prognosis was observed in dogs with PAF. Better outcomes was associated with younger age at surgery, shorter lesion length and milder spinal cord T2W hyperintensity. Larger, prospective studies with standardized outcome measures and extended follow-up will be required to validate these preliminary findings and guide future therapeutic approaches.

First Report of Mast Cell Tumor Cells in Dog’s Spinal Fluid

A rare case from Japan describes a 7-year-old Chihuahua with a mast cell tumor (MCT) that eventually spread to the brain. Despite surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, the dog developed seizures. MRI showed brain nodules, and for the first time, cytology of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) revealed mast cell tumor cells carrying the same KIT mutation as the original tumor. This confirms that MCT can metastasize to the central nervous system and highlights CSF cytology as a potential diagnostic tool. While extremely uncommon, this case underscores the aggressive potential of MCTs and the need for vigilance when neurological signs appear.
