In many parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, livestock health systems are hindered by delayed diagnosis, weak disease surveillance and limited laboratory access, especially in rural and peri-urban areas. Disease outbreaks frequently originate at community level, often without timely laboratory confirmation. This makes Primary Animal Health Care the essential first step in the diagnostic process.

We invite you to join our next A.L.P.H.A. Plus Initiative webinar: "The Role of Primary Animal Health Care in Laboratory Diagnostics" on 24 June 2026 (15:00–16:30 EAT).

Key topics include:

- Primary Animal Health Care as the first step in diagnostics
- Sample collection and handling at primary level – best practices for collecting, labelling, storing and transporting samples
- Linking field findings to laboratory testing
- Live Q&A session

The session will be led by guest speaker Dr Joy Inonge Kaluwe (Livestock Service, Zambia) and moderated by Francis Kalule (Medical Lead - Diagnostics North, West and East Africa).

This session is designed for veterinarians, laboratory professionals, primary animal health workers, extension officers, livestock advisors and farm managers.

Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) remains one of the most significant causes of illness and death in cattle, with major economic implications for beef and dairy operations across Sub-Saharan Africa. The condition is multifactorial, arising from complex interactions among the host, environment, and pathogens.

To address this, the Zoetis Learning Academy has launched the Bovine Respiratory Disease Learning Series; five concise online modules designed to equip veterinarians, paraveterinarians and livestock producers with practical knowledge to strengthen herd health outcomes.

The series covers:

- Module 1: The BRD complex - how host, environment and pathogens interact
- Module 2: Viral pathogens (IBR, BVDV, PI3, BRSV) - airway damage, immunity and co-infections
- Module 3: Bacterial pathogens (M. haemolytica, P. multocida, H. somni, - Mycoplasma bovis) - signs, severity and spread
- Module 4: Clinical signs, diagnostics (culture, PCR, Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL), serology) and economic costs
- Module 5: Prevention and therapy - environment, colostrum, biosecurity, vaccination, antibiotics, NSAIDs and metaphylaxis

Early recognition saves lives and reduces losses.

Upon completion of all five modules, participants will receive a certificate.

Zoetis supported the recently concluded KVA Congress in Diani, Kenya, as a Gold Sponsor. The congress, themed "Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health," connected over 300 veterinary and animal health stakeholders from across the region to share knowledge and strengthen collaboration.

A highlight of the congress was the keynote session delivered by Bitsu Mekete on "Udder Health for Profitable Dairy: Practical Management from Lactation to Dry-Off." The session sparked meaningful discussions on practical approaches that support farmer outcomes and improve dairy herd health. Beyond the plenary sessions, the congress created valuable space to listen, learn and strengthen collaboration across the animal health community.

Zoetis extends its appreciation to everyone who shared their insights and experiences, especially to our partner, Surgipharm, for the strong on-ground collaboration throughout the congress.

We are taking key insights forward into our ongoing work and engagements in Kenya.

We are proud to have participated in the Veterinary Association of Zambia (VAZ) AGM & Scientific Conference, held in April 2026. The event brought together animal health professionals and paraprofessionals to share knowledge, advancements and experiences in animal health and welfare, fostering the coordinated development of veterinary practices across Zambia.

During the conference, three veterinarians were recognised as winners of the Zoetis Learning Academy (ZLA) engagement competition:

One prize was awarded to Dr Paul Divine Nyangulu, who completed the highest number of ZLA courses.

Two prizes were awarded to Drs Chirwa Mwiza and Lindizyani Ruth Mfune, who engaged with ZLA courses during the qualifying period

These awards reflect Zoetis' ongoing commitment to empowering veterinary professionals through meaningful continuing professional development initiatives like the Zoetis Learning Academy.

Zoetis extends its congratulations to all winners and to everyone who made time to learn, upskill and raise the bar for animal health and veterinary practice in Zambia.

In April 2026, Zoetis was honoured to join the Stakeholder Workshop on Diagnostics for Effective Ruminant Disease Control in Kenya, hosted at ILRI Nairobi. The session brought together partners to discuss the role of diagnostics in strengthening livestock health across the region.

As a private partner supporting diagnostics across Sub-Saharan Africa, Zoetis shared our perspectives on the value of diagnostics, benefits for farmers and industry, and sustainable service models. Livestock diseases threaten productivity, livelihoods, trade and food security, making diagnostics essential for early detection, surveillance and evidence-based treatment.

Working with local partners, we see a lot of opportunities in:

- Strengthening public–private partnerships and inclusive engagement

- Providing continuous professional training

- Expanding access for farmers

- Keeping farmers consistently engaged

Zoetis extends its appreciation to Francis Kalule for championing diagnostic services in scope of the ALPHA Plus Initiative across Sub-Saharan Africa. Through continued collaboration, we support the integration of diagnostics into animal health plans and alignment with country priorities.
