Fracture de l’os rudimentaire 🦴

Ce poney nous a été référé pour une fracture de l’os rudimentaire de l’antérieur droit.

La particularité ? La fracture se situait tout en haut de l’os – une zone cruciale pour la stabilité du carpe.‼️

Dans certains cas, un morceau de l’os rudimentaire peut simplement être retiré. Mais ici, c’était impossible : la fracture était trop haute, trop proche de l’articulation. L’enlever aurait rendu la zone instable.

🔩Nous avons donc choisi une chirurgie réparatrice : le fragment a été remis en place et fixé avec une plaque et des vis, afin d’assurer une bonne stabilité pendant la guérison, tout en préservant le bon fonctionnement de l’articulation.

Une intervention minutieuse, rendue possible grâce à l’expertise de notre équipe et la qualité de nos installations. 🙏🏼

Splint bone fracture 🦴

This pony was referred to Equitom with a fracture of the lateral splint bone in the right front leg.

What made this fracture particularly challenging was its location: right at the top of the splint bone. At that level, the bone plays an important role in maintaining the stability of the carpus. ‼️

In some cases, a fractured splint bone can simply be removed. But because this break was so high and close to the joint, that wasn’t an option here, it would have caused too much instability.

🔩Instead, we opted for surgical repair: the bone fragment was repositioned and stabilised using a plate and screws.
This approach ensures the leg has the support and stability it needs to heal properly while maintaining the normal function of the joint.

A delicate procedure, but one we’re fully equipped to perform, thanks to our expertise and advanced surgical facilities.🙏🏼

Splinterbeenbreuk 🦴

Deze pony werd naar Equitom doorverwezen met een breuk van het laterale splinterbeen in het rechtervoorbeen.

Wat deze breuk bijzonder uitdagend maakte, was de locatie: helemaal bovenaan het splinterbeen. Op dat niveau speelt het bot een belangrijke rol in de stabiliteit van het carpusgewricht. ‼️

In sommige gevallen kan een gebroken splinterbeen gewoon verwijderd worden. Maar omdat deze breuk zo hoog en dicht bij het gewricht zat, was dat hier geen optie, dat zou te veel instabiliteit veroorzaken.

🔩 Daarom kozen we voor een chirurgisch herstel: het botfragment werd terug op zijn plaats gebracht en vastgezet met een plaat en schroeven.
Zo krijgt het been de steun en stabiliteit die nodig zijn voor een goed herstel, mét behoud van de normale functie van het gewricht.

Een delicate ingreep, maar eentje die we perfect kunnen uitvoeren dankzij onze expertise en geavanceerde chirurgische infrastructuur. 🙏🏼

Chirurgie vitale pour une mycose des poches gutturales
😷 Ce cheval nous a été référé après avoir présenté des saignements de nez spontanés – souvent le premier signe d’alerte d’une infection fongique grave (mycose) des poches gutturales, potentiellement mortelle.

Cette pathologie est extrêmement dangereuse. Les poches gutturales contiennent des artères majeures et des nerfs crâniens, et le champignon peut coloniser et dégrader la paroi des artères. Si une artère est atteinte, cela entraîne un risque élevé d’hémorragie massive et soudaine, souvent fatale sans traitement rapide.

Le plus délicat ? Les signes précoces sont discrets : petits saignements de nez, troubles de la déglutition (dysphagie), ou encore signes neurologiques comme un mouvement anormal des yeux.

🩸 C’est pourquoi tout saignement de nez chez un cheval doit être pris au sérieux et exploré par endoscopie afin d’exclure une mycose des poches gutturales. Un diagnostic précoce peut réellement sauver des vies.

Dans ce cas, nous avons réalisé une procédure délicate et vitale. Par une petite incision au niveau de l’encolure, nous avons introduit un cathéter dans l’artère carotide, puis navigué sous guidage fluoroscopique jusqu’aux artères alimentant les poches gutturales. Une fois en place, ces artères ont été obstruées à l’aide de micro-spires métalliques. Cela permet de stopper le risque d’hémorragie en isolant l’artère atteinte, dont la paroi a été fragilisée par la mycose.

Cette embolisation est combinée à un traitement antifongique, seul capable de cibler directement l’infection. Ensemble, ces traitements donnent au cheval une véritable chance de guérison.

⏱️ C’est une véritable course contre la montre ! Mais avec une intervention rapide et le bon traitement, l’espoir est bien réel. Ce cheval s’est très bien remis, et l’infection fongique avait déjà nettement diminué lors du premier contrôle post-opératoire

Life-saving surgery for guttural pouch mycosis
😷 This horse was referred to us after presenting with spontaneous nosebleeds – often the first warning sign of a serious and potentially fatal fungal infection (mycosis) in the guttural pouches.

This condition is extremely dangerous. The guttural pouches contain major arteries and cranial nerves, and the fungus can colonize and degrade the arterial wall. If an artery is affected, there is a high risk of massive and sudden hemorrhage – often fatal without urgent treatment.

The most challenging part? Early signs are subtle: mild nosebleeds, swallowing difficulties (dysphagia), or even neurological symptoms such as abnormal eye movement.

🩸 That’s why any nosebleed in a horse should be taken seriously and investigated via endoscopy to rule out guttural pouch mycosis. Early diagnosis can truly save lives.

In this case, we performed a delicate, life-saving procedure. Through a small incision in the neck, a catheter was inserted into the carotid artery and navigated under fluoroscopic guidance to the arteries supplying the guttural pouches. Once in place, these arteries were embolized using metallic microcoils. This stops the risk of hemorrhage by isolating the affected artery, whose wall had been weakened by the fungal infection.

This embolization is combined with antifungal treatment, which is the only way to directly target the infection. Together, these treatments give the horse a real chance at recovery.

⏱️ It’s a true race against time! But with quick action and the right treatment, there is real hope. This horse recovered very well, and the fungal infection had already significantly regressed by the first post-op check.

This procedure was carried out in collaboration with ECG surgeon Michael Meulyzer.

Levensreddende chirurgie bij een schimmelinfectie van de luchtzakken
😷 Dit paard werd naar ons doorverwezen na spontane neusbloedingen – vaak het eerste alarmsignaal van een ernstige en mogelijk dodelijke schimmelinfectie (mycose) in de luchtzakken.

Deze aandoening is uiterst gevaarlijk. In de luchtzakken lopen grote slagaders en hersenzenuwen, en de schimmel kan de vaatwand aantasten door zich erop te nestelen en deze af te breken. Wordt een slagader aangetast, dan is er een groot risico op een plotse, massale bloeding – vaak fataal zonder snelle tussenkomst.

Wat het extra verraderlijk maakt? De eerste symptomen zijn subtiel: lichte neusbloedingen, slikproblemen (dysfagie) of neurologische signalen zoals een abnormale oogbeweging.

🩸 Daarom moet elke neusbloeding bij een paard serieus genomen worden en onderzocht worden via endoscopie om een luchtzakmycose uit te sluiten. Een vroege diagnose kan letterlijk levens redden.

In dit geval voerden we een delicate, levensreddende ingreep uit. Via een kleine incisie in de hals werd een katheter in de halsslagader ingebracht en onder fluoroscopische geleiding naar de slagaders geleid die de luchtzakken van bloed voorzien. Eenmaal ter plaatse werden deze slagaders afgesloten met metalen microcoils. Zo wordt het risico op bloeding gestopt door de aangetaste slagader – waarvan de wand verzwakt was door de schimmel – te isoleren.

Deze embolisatie wordt gecombineerd met een antischimmelbehandeling, die als enige rechtstreeks de infectie kan aanpakken. Samen bieden deze behandelingen het paard een echte kans op herstel.

⏱️ Het is een echte race tegen de klok! Maar met een snelle aanpak en de juiste behandeling is er hoop. Dit paard herstelde uitstekend en bij de eerste controle na de operatie was de infectie al aanzienlijk verminderd.

Deze ingreep werd uitgevoerd in samenwerking met chirurg Michael Meulyzer van ECG.

🚨 Plaie profonde proche du sabot

Ce cheval a été référé à Equitom suite à une plaie profonde localisée dans le glome latéral du postérieur droit. Le vétérinaire traitant avait réalisé une première suture sur place pour tenter de contrôler un saignement important. Mais face à la persistance de l’hémorragie, le cheval a été transféré en clinique pour une prise en charge spécialisée.

🪡 À son arrivée, notre équipe a rapidement stoppé l’hémorragie avant de passer en chirurgie. Le vaisseau responsable du saignement a été identifié et ligaturé avec précision.

La plaie a ensuite été soigneusement nettoyée, suturée, puis immobilisée avec un plâtre. Cette zone particulièrement mobile nécessite une immobilisation stricte pour assurer une bonne cicatrisation.

Une intervention minutieuse et essentielle pour favoriser une guérison optimale.
On lui souhaite un rétablissement tout en douceur, entouré de bons soins et de tendresse ! 💙

🚨 Deep wound near the hoof

This horse was referred to Equitom with a deep wound located in the lateral heel bulb of the right hind leg. The attending veterinarian had already performed an initial suture to try and control the significant bleeding. But as the bleeding persisted, the horse was transferred to our clinic for specialised care.

🪡 Upon arrival, our team quickly stopped the bleeding before proceeding to surgery. The vessel responsible was identified and carefully ligated.

The wound was then thoroughly cleaned, sutured, and the leg immobilised with a cast. Due to the highly mobile location, strict immobilisation is key to proper healing.

🚨 Diepe wonde vlakbij de hoef

Dit paard werd doorverwezen naar Equitom met een diepe wonde ter hoogte van de laterale glome van het rechterachterbeen. De dierenarts ter plaatse had al een eerste hechting aangebracht om het hevige bloeden onder controle te krijgen. Maar omdat de bloeding bleef aanhouden, werd het paard naar onze kliniek overgebracht voor gespecialiseerde zorgen.

🪡 Bij aankomst kon ons team het bloeden snel stoppen, waarna we onmiddellijk zijn overgegaan tot chirurgie. Het bloedvat dat verantwoordelijk was voor de bloeding werd nauwkeurig opgespoord en afgebonden.

De wonde werd grondig gereinigd, opnieuw gehecht en vervolgens geïmmobiliseerd met een gipsverband. Op deze locatie – die sterk beweegt bij elke stap – is volledige immobilisatie cruciaal voor een goede genezing.

Een precieze, noodzakelijke ingreep om het herstel alle kansen te geven.
We wensen hem een vlot en zacht herstel toe, omringd door goede zorgen en veel liefde. 💙

Grave fracture du canon

Cette ponette de 6 ans a été référée à Equitom suite à une fracture complexe, comminutive et très instable de l’un de ses membres. Déjà présente depuis plusieurs jours, cette lésion osseuse présentait un risque élevé de complications.

🔎 Les fractures du canon sont particulièrement délicates : l’os est peu protégé par les tissus mous, ce qui fragilise la peau et augmente considérablement le risque d’infection, même en l’absence de plaie ouverte. Dans ce cas, une ostéosynthèse aurait été trop risquée avec un risque d’infections élevé et une instabilité.

🩻 Après discussion avec la propriétaire, notre équipe a opté pour une amputation. Lors de l’intervention, le membre distal a été amputé juste sous le jarret pour permettre, par la suite, le port d’une prothèse, rendu possible grâce au petit gabarit de la ponette. L’os a été coupé de manière lisse, puis un petit coussin a été formé au niveau du moignon à l’aide des tendons, des fléchisseurs, du suspenseur et de l’extenseur, avant de suturer la peau par-dessus.

🦴Des broches ont ensuite été fixées dans le tibia, associées à un plâtre faisant office de prothèse temporaire. Le poids reposant uniquement sur les broches, cela permet au moignon de cicatriser sans pression, évitant ainsi nécrose et complications.

Le processus de guérison est en cours, avec en ligne de mire l’adaptation d’une prothèse définitive. Le chemin sera long, mais cette petite guerrière a déjà fait preuve d’un courage immense, et notre équipe sera là pour la soutenir à chaque étape ! 💙

♦️Severe Cannon Bone Fracture

This 6-year-old mare was referred to Equitom with a complex, comminuted, and highly unstable fracture of one of her limbs. The bone injury had already been present for several days and carried a high risk of complications.

🔎 Cannon bone fractures are particularly challenging: the bone is poorly protected by soft tissues, making the skin vulnerable and significantly increasing the risk of infection—even without an open wound. In this case, osteosynthesis would have been too risky due to the high risk of infection and lack of stability.

🩻 After discussion with the owner, our team opted for an amputation. The distal limb was amputated just below the hock, allowing for the possibility of a prosthesis later on—something feasible thanks to the mare’s small size. The bone was cut smoothly, and the tendons (flexors, suspensory ligament, and extensor) were used to create a cushion at the stump, before the skin was sutured over it.

🦴Pins were then inserted into the tibia and combined with a cast acting as a temporary prosthesis. Since the weight rests solely on the pins, the stump can heal without pressure—avoiding necrosis and complications.

The healing process is now underway, with a definitive prosthesis as the next goal. The road ahead will be long, but this little warrior has already shown incredible courage—and our team will be right there, every step of the way. 💙

♦️Ernstige pijpbeenfractuur

Deze 6-jarige pony werd naar Equitom Namur doorverwezen met een complexe, comminutieve en zeer instabiele breuk van een van haar benen. De fractuur was al enkele dagen oud en bracht een groot risico op complicaties met zich mee.

🔎 Fracturen van het pijpbeen zijn bijzonder delicaat: het bot is nauwelijks omgeven door zacht weefsel, waardoor de huid erg kwetsbaar is en het infectierisico aanzienlijk toeneemt, zelfs zonder open wonde. In dit geval werd osteosynthese als te risicovol beschouwd vanwege de instabiliteit en het hoge infectierisico.

🩻 Na overleg met de eigenaar besloot ons team om over te gaan tot amputatie. Het onderste lidmaat werd net onder het spronggewricht geamputeerd, zodat er later een prothese kon geplaatst worden: mogelijk dankzij het kleine formaat van de pony. Het bot werd glad afgezaagd, waarna de buigpezen, de strekpees en het tussenpeesligament werden gebruikt om een zachte kussenstructuur aan het uiteinde van de stomp te creëren, en de huid werd er netjes overheen gehecht.

🦴 Er werden vervolgens pinnen in het scheenbeen geplaatst, in combinatie met een gipsverband dat dienstdoet als tijdelijke prothese. Doordat het gewicht uitsluitend op de pinnen rust, krijgt de stomp de kans om volledig te genezen zonder druk, waardoor necrose en complicaties vermeden worden.

Het herstelproces is volop aan de gang, met als doel een definitieve prothese op termijn. De weg is nog lang, maar deze kleine vechter heeft nu al ongelofelijke moed getoond en ons team zal er elke stap van de weg voor haar zijn. 💙

Premiers instants sous surveillance attentive
Après une mise bas rapide mais intense, ce petit poulain Arabe a pris sa toute première bouffée d’air.
La jument a réagi comme la nature le veut : elle a léché son poulain pour le sécher, l’a stimulé et a commencé à créer ce lien si particulier. Mais même lorsque tout semble bien se passer, les premières heures restent cruciales.
Le poulain s’est-il levé assez vite ? A-t-il bien tété ? Comment est le cordon ombilical ? Et si le placenta ne s’évacue pas à temps ?
À la clinique, nous surveillons chaque détail de près. Cela nous permet d’intervenir immédiatement au moindre signe d’alerte et d’offrir à la mère comme au poulain les meilleures chances dès le départ.

After a smooth yet intense delivery, this refined Arabian foal took its very first breath.

The mare did what she instinctively knew: licking her foal dry, stimulating it, and building that first bond. But even when everything seems to go well, the first few hours remain critical.

Did the foal get up quickly enough? Has it nursed properly? How’s the umbilical cord? And what if the placenta hasn’t been expelled on time?

At the clinic, we monitor all of this closely. It allows us to detect the slightest problem early on and give both mare and foal the very best start in life.

Eerste momenten in veilige handen
Na een vlotte maar intensieve bevalling mocht dit fijn gebouwde Arabiertje voor het eerst ademhalen.
De merrie deed wat ze moest doen: haar veulen drooglikken, stimuleren en de eerste band opbouwen. Maar zelfs als alles goed lijkt te gaan, blijven die eerste uren cruciaal.
Is het veulen snel genoeg opgestaan? Heeft het voldoende gedronken? Hoe is de navelstatus? En wat als de nageboorte niet spontaan loskomt?
In de kliniek volgen we dit allemaal van dichtbij op. Zo kunnen we tijdig ingrijpen bij de kleinste afwijking en zowel merrie als veulen de beste start geven.

🌡️ Fortes chaleurs = hausse des cas de coliques ! Soyez vigilants.

Cette semaine, nous avons accueilli plusieurs chevaux atteints de coliques. Une des raisons principales ? La canicule. Même une légère déshydratation peut provoquer un ralentissement du transit intestinal, jusqu’à entraîner un blocage. C’est une urgence que l’on peut pourtant éviter.

✨ Pour prévenir ces risques et prendre soin de votre cheval pendant les périodes de forte chaleur, voici quelques conseils simples mais essentiels :

💧 Hydratation avant tout

Proposez de l’eau fraîche (pas glacée) plusieurs fois par jour dans un seau, en plus de l’abreuvoir automatique.

Vous pouvez y ajouter un peu de jus de pomme ou des électrolytes pour encourager la prise de boisson.

Laissez une pierre à sel à disposition, cela stimule naturellement la soif.

Si votre cheval boit peu, pensez à tremper son foin pendant 10 minutes avant distribution.

Offrez-lui des repas hydratants comme un mash tiède ou du préalpin humide.

🌿 Aménagez son environnement

Évitez les sorties en pleine journée. Préférez tôt le matin ou en soirée.

S’il est au pré, assurez-vous qu’il ait de l’ombre. Sinon, une couverture mouillée sur le dos peut apporter un vrai soulagement.

Gardez vos chevaux à l’intérieur pendant les heures les plus chaudes.

🚿 Rafraîchir le corps pour apaiser l’organisme

Do**hez votre cheval une fois par jour à l’eau fraîche (jamais froide), surtout après un effort.

Après la do**he, raclez bien l’excédent d’eau pour éviter l’effet “étuve”.

Une couverture humide peut être posée quelques minutes pour un effet rafraîchissant.

☀️ Et pour les peaux sensibles ?

Si votre cheval a des zones dépigmentées (nez rose, contours des yeux), appliquez plusieur fois par jour une crème solaire à haute protection (indice 50+).

À la clinique, nous redoublons d’attention pour prévenir les coups de chaleur : do**hes régulières, électrolytes, seaux de fruits frais… parce qu’en été, protéger, hydrater et surveiller sont les meilleurs réflexes pour éviter les urgences.

This week, we’ve treated several horses suffering from colic. One of the main reasons? The heatwave. Even mild dehydration can slow down intestinal transit and lead to a blockage. It’s an emergency — but one that can often be prevented.

✨ To help you care for your horse during hot weather, here are some simple but essential tips:

💧 Hydration first

Offer fresh (not cold) water several times a day in a bucket, alongside the automatic waterer.

You can add a splash of apple juice or electrolytes to encourage drinking.

Leave a salt lick available — it naturally stimulates thirst.

If your horse drinks little, consider soaking the hay for 10 minutes before feeding.

Offer hydrating meals like warm mash or moistened Pre Alpin.

Avoid turnout during the hottest hours. Prefer early mornings or evenings.

If your horse is in the pasture, make sure there’s shade. If not, a wet towel on the back can bring real relief.

Keep horses indoors during the hottest parts of the day.

🚿 Cool the body to soothe the system

Shower your horse once a day with fresh (never cold) water, especially after exercise.

After rinsing, scrape off the excess water to avoid a sauna effect.

A damp towel can be laid on the back for a few minutes for extra cooling.

☀️ Sensitive skin?

If your horse has depigmented areas (like a pink nose or eye contours), apply a high-protection sunscreen (SPF 50+).

At the clinic, we’re extra cautious to prevent heatstroke: regular showers, electrolytes, fresh fruit buckets… Because in summer, protecting, hydrating, and monitoring are the best ways to avoid emergencies.

🌡️ Hittegolf = meer koliekgevallen! Wees waakzaam.

Deze week hebben we meerdere paarden behandeld met koliek. Een van de voornaamste oorzaken? De hitte. Zelfs lichte uitdroging kan zorgen voor een trager darmtransport en uiteindelijk een blokkade veroorzaken. Een spoedgeval dat vaak vermeden kan worden.

✨ Om risico’s te beperken en je paard goed te verzorgen tijdens warme periodes, geven we je graag enkele eenvoudige maar essentiële tips:

💧 Hydratatie is cruciaal

Bied meerdere keren per dag vers (niet ijskoud) water aan in een emmer, naast de automatische drinkbak.

Je kan wat appelsap of elektrolyten toevoegen om het drinken aan te moedigen.

Zorg voor een liksteen — dat stimuleert op natuurlijke wijze de dorst.

Drinkt je paard weinig? Week het hooi dan 10 minuten voor het voeren.

Voorzie vochtige maaltijden zoals een lauwwarme slobber of natte Pre Alpin.

🌿 Pas de omgeving aan

Vermijd buitenzetten tijdens de heetste uren van de dag. Ga liever ’s morgens vroeg of ’s avonds.

Zorg voor schaduw in de weide. Geen schaduw? Een natte doek op de rug kan verlichtend werken.

Houd je paard binnen tijdens de warmste momenten van de dag.

🚿 Koel het lichaam om het systeem te ondersteunen

Do**he je paard dagelijks met lauw (niet koud) water, vooral na inspanning.

Verwijder daarna goed het overtollige water om een sauna-effect te vermijden.

Een natte handdoek kan enkele minuten op de rug gelegd worden voor extra verkoeling.

☀️ Gevoelige huid?

Heeft je paard ongepigmenteerde zones (zoals een roze neus of rond de ogen)? Breng dan meerdere keren per dag zonnecrème met hoge bescherming (factor 50+) aan.

In de kliniek doen we er alles aan om een hitteslag te voorkomen: regelmatige do**hes, elektrolyten, emmers met vers fruit… Want in de zomer zijn beschermen, hydrateren en observeren de beste manieren om noodgevallen te vermijden.

Zorg goed voor je paard, en wacht niet op de eerste signalen om te reageren ❤️

🫁 Ce cheval a été référé à Equitom après avoir souffert longuement de symptômes respiratoires chroniques, similaires à de l’asthme, accompagnés de grosses difficultés à respirer. Malgré plusieurs traitements, son état ne s’améliorait pas. Le signe qu’un problème plus complexe pouvait se cacher.

Notre équipe de médecine interne a réalisé un bilan diagnostique complet : endoscopie, échographie thoracique et radiographies.

Le verdict a surpris tout le monde : une tumeur obstruait partiellement une des bronches principales. Une découverte qui expliquait enfin les efforts respiratoires marqués et l’inefficacité des traitements classiques. 💡

Ce cas nous rappelle à quel point un diagnostic approfondi est essentiel, surtout quand les symptômes ne correspondent pas aux schémas habituels. Derrière chaque cas complexe, il y a un cheval qui mérite des réponses, et c’est exactement ce que nous nous engageons à lui offrir. 🩵

Our internal medicine team carried out a comprehensive diagnostic work-up, including endoscopy, thoracic ultrasound and radiographs. The findings were unexpected: a tumor partially obstructing one of the main bronchi, a discovery that finally explained the marked respiratory effort and poor response to conventional therapies. 💡

Ons team interne geneeskunde voerde een uitgebreid onderzoek uit: endoscopie, echografie van de borstkas en radiografieën. De uitkomst was onverwacht: een tumor die één van de hoofdbronchi gedeeltelijk blokkeerde.
