Met grote trots mogen wij aankondigen dat onze resident, Janne Stael, met succes geslaagd is voor haar specialisatie examen. Vanaf heden mag zij zich officieel ECVS Diplomate noemen! Wij wensen haar een schitterende toekomst toe, met vele boeiende en uitdagende chirurgische ingrepen! ✨

✨Nieuwe gezichten gespot in onze gangen? Grote kans dat het een van onze interns is! ✨
Graag introduceren wij onze vier zeer gemotiveerde en enthousiaste interns, die je kan aantreffen doorheen de gangen van de klinieken grote huisdieren. Michelle Van Zandweghe, Amber Van Broekhoeven, Marieke Van Couteren en Noémie Malingreau roteren tussen de verschillende diensten van anesthesie, chirurgie, orthopedie, medische beeldvorming, interne geneeskunde en voortplanting.

🦙🦙Kleine alpaca’s worden groot! 🦙🦙
Een maand geleden werd deze cria, Oracle, bij ons op de faculteit geopereerd.
Omwille van een ernstige bot infectie werd er besloten om een been amputatie uit te voeren tot aan de carpaal gewrichten.
Kijk hoe goed hij het nu doet! Wij zijn enorm blij dat Oracle een gelukkig en pijnloos leven kan lijden samen met zijn prothese.

🦙🦙Little alpacas are becoming big ones! 🦙🦙
A month ago this little alpaca, Oracle, was operated at our faculty.
Due to a severe bone infection it was decided to perform a leg amputation just below the carpus.
Look how well he’s doing now! We’re very happy that he can live a happy and pain free life with his prosthesis.

Dierenorthopedist Wesley Michiels heeft een prothese gemaakt voor alpacaveulen Oracle uit West-Vlaanderen. Het onderste stuk van de voorpoot werd enkele weken geleden geamputeerd tot onder het polsgewricht, maar dankzij de prothese kan Oracle toch gewoon weer rennen 🤩

Met veel vreugde kondigen we aan dat onze oog dokter Eline Vercruysse geslaagd is voor het theorie gedeelte van haar examen!! In juni volgt het praktijk gedeelte om een diplomate te worden van de European College of Veterinary Ophtalmologists. We zijn heel trots dat ze voor het eerste gedeelte geslaagd is and zijn blij haar terug te mogen verwelkomen op de kliniek na haar intense studie periode!
Als uw paard of ander huisdier nood heeft aan een oogdokter, bel dan snel naar onze secretariaat voor een afspraak!

We are super excited to announce that our eye specialist Eline Vercruysse has
passed the theoretical part of her board exam!! In June Eline will sit her practical part to become a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. We are very proud of her for passing the first part and happy to welcome her back to the clinic after an intense study period!
If you need an eye doctor for your horse or other large animal please don't hesitate to give our front desk a call to make an appointment!

Sinds 26 september kunnen jullie deze vier zeer gemotiveerde en enthousiaste interns aantreffen doorheen de gangen van de klinieken grote huisdieren. Elien Joos, Marie Laekeman, Ineke Carmeliet en Marie Michotte zijn onze nieuwe interns die mee instaan voor de verzorging van de paarden op de afdelingen orthopedie, hospitalisatie, medische beeldvorming, tandheelkunde en chirurgie. Aarzel niet om ze aan te spreken, ze helpen jullie graag verder!

Since september 26th, you can find these four highly motivated and enthusiastic interns in the corridors of the large animal clinics. Elien Joos, Marie Laekeman, Ineke Carmeliet and Marie Michotte are our new interns who help taking care of the horses in the orthopaedics, hospitalisation, medical imaging, dentistry, and surgery departments. Do not hesitate to flag them down, they will be happy to help you!

Op 30 September was het de laatste werkdag van de decaan van de faculteit Diergeneeskunde. Na 39 jaar gaat Prof. Frank Gasthuys op welverdiend emeritaat. Sinds 1 Oktober is Prof. Martens, tot dan de voorzitter van onze vakgroep, aangesteld als nieuwe decaan. Zij zal dit combineren met haar passie: de chirurgie van het paard en ze blijft voor een groot deel actief op de vakgroep. Wij wensen haar veel succes toe met deze nieuwe uitdaging!



30 September was the last workday of the dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. After 39 years, Prof Frank Gasthuys is leaving for his well-deserved retirement. Since 1 October, Prof Martens, until then the chairman of our department, has been appointed the new dean. She will combine this with her passion: equine surgery. She will remain active in the department. We wish her a lot of success with this new challenge

It's already the sixth year in a row that we have achieved this! We are proud of all our researchers making this possible - thank you for all your hard work!

Are you feeling as hot as we are?🥵 With the temperatures rising above the 30 degrees mark again we should take extra care of our horses🐴🦄. Here are some tips from the AAEP about what to do when your horse is overheated. If you have any doubt, please don't hesitate to call! ☎️ Our vets are there for you 24/7!

As temperatures keep climbing, here is your reminder to pay close attention to signs of heat stress in your horse this summer. ☀️🐴

Signs of heat stroke may range from mild to severe and life-threatening. Foals usually cannot take as much heat as adult horses. A mare may be fine, but her foal may be getting sick from being out on a hot day. Horses with heavy muscling or excess fat or in poor condition will have more problems. Keep in mind that exercise is a major source of body heat and that strenuous work on a hot, humid day can lead to problems in a short period of time for even the best-conditioned horse.

Does this mean you should not ride on a hot day? Not necessarily. It just means you should take precautions and use your common sense. Remain vigilant for dehydration and signs of heat exhaustion, as heat exhaustion should not be underestimated and can advance to heat stroke quickly. Above all, be kind and attentive to your equine partner’s need. If you feel hot, they feel hotter. So if they look tired—it’s time for a drink, a cold bath, and a break in the shade.

Onze laatstejaarsstudenten hebben hun laatste examens afgelegd en spreiden nu hun vleugels. We wensen hen allemaal heel veel geluk toe en kijken er reeds naar uit om hier en daar iemand van hen terug te zien als toekomstige interns, doorverwijzende dierenartsen of in een andere context!
Aan al onze voormalige tweede masterstudenten: welkom in het laatste jaar! We kunnen niet wachten om jullie te leren kennen en om met jullie samen te werken tijdens deze spannende periode in jullie studies!

Het ecvs congres in Porto zit er weer op. We zijn helemaal klaar om de nieuwste inzichten en ontwikkelingen toe te passen in de kliniek. Prof. Ann Martens en Hanna Haardt (Chirurgie), Dr. Maarten Oosterlinck en Anna Mokry (sport medicine) en Alexis Leps (Tandheelkunde) sluiten dit schitterend congres af met een heerlijk afscheidsfeest.

Sadly the congres has already come to an end. After a lot of great input our vets are ready to take on the next challenge at the clinic! In the picture you see Prof. Ann Martens and Hanna Haardt (surgery), Dr. Maarten Oosterlinck and Anna Mokry (sport medicine) and Alexis Leps (dental) celebrating the final evening of a great time in Porto!

Deze week vindt het jaarlijkse congres van het 'European College of Veterinary Surgeons' (ECVS) plaats in Porto. Twee van onze dierenartsen (Prof. Ann Martens en Hanna Haardt) zijn vroeg aangekomen om de locatie te verkennen voordat de rest van het team arriveert. Doe ze zeker de groeten, als je er toevallig bent! Een dikke merci aan alle teamleden die thuis zijn gebleven om de allerbeste zorg aan onze patiënten te bieden!

This week the annual congress of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS) is taking place in Porto. Two of our vets (Prof. Ann Martens and Hanna Haardt) have arrived early to scout out the venue before the rest of the team arrives. Make sure to say hi to them, should you happen to be there! Shout-out to all of the team members that stayed home to provide the highest standard of care to our patients!
