𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗶𝘂𝗺: 𝗮 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Did you know that alpacas and llamas require higher levels of selenium than most ruminant species? A deficiency of selenium can lead to reduced fertility (for male and female), embryonic death, abortion, premature birth, stillbirth and weakness of the newborn cria. Selenium passes the blood-placenta barrier, so the cria is born with an adequate reserve of selenium. An important condition is that the dam is not deficient in this trace element.

Agricultural soils in many European regions are often deficient in selenium. To compensate for this, it 𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙪𝙢 𝙩𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙖 𝙙𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙮 𝙗𝙖𝙨𝙞𝙨. A daily oral supplementation leads to more constant blood serum levels, compared to injectable supplementation once every few months. When feeding Alpamin, it is by no means necessary to supplement extra selenium by injection.

𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗩𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗗 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗹𝗽𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻

Many of you have shorn their alpacas, or will be shearing them soon. After shearing, the skin of an alpaca is exposed to UV-radiation. This skin exposure to sunlight results in an increase in natural production of vitamin D. Therefore we advise to reduce the daily dose of Alpamin® from 100 gram (winter) to 75 gram (summer) per adult animal per day. This reduction can take please right after shearing. Don’t forget to increase the daily dose to 100 gram again in October!

𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗗 𝗔𝗟𝗣𝗔𝗠𝗜𝗡-𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗨𝗟𝗔:
addition of 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗹, the bioactive form of vitamin D

We all know that midwinter is the critical period for ensuring adequate vitamin D intake in alpacas. During this season, low UV-radiation and longer fleeces do not allow enough natural production of vitamin D in the skin. Eating a daily portion of Alpamin ensures good blood Vitamin D levels for healthy adult alpacas, but aging animals (over 10 years of age) or animals under metabolic stress may sometimes benefit from a bit extra.

After vitamin D (cholecalciferol) is produced in the skin or orally ingested, it goes through a metabolic pathway. It will first be metabolized to 25(OH) vitamin D (calcidiol) in the liver, and consecutively to 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D (calcitriol) in the kidney. Calcitriol is the 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗗, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗗. It regulates intestinal absorption and bone deposition of calcium and phosphorous, 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗹𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗴𝗲.

In September 2023, 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗹𝗽𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻. This small improvement of the formula helps to support the vital functions of your alpacas even better. Calcitriol is water soluble, and therefore not accumulated in the body tissues. It has a very high safety margin.
