💡 Laryngeal hemiplegia, commonly known as “roaring”, is a condition caused by damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve. This leads to paralysis of the muscle responsible for opening the airway during exercise.

👉 Due to reduced airflow, this condition is a common cause of respiratory noise during exercise and can significantly impact your horse’s performance.

🌟 At Equine Clinic De Morette, we always perform first a thorough diagnostic evaluation to assess the severity of the condition and determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your horse. Then we typically perform a standing procedure combined with a laser surgery. In most cases general anesthesia is not necessary.

🎥 In this video, we performed a standing tie-back surgery combined with a laser ventriculocordectomy. These procedures improve airflow, allowing horses to breathe more freely and return to optimal performance. ✨

Last week, our equine dentistry specialist Elke Pollaris had the honor of attending the EVDA (Equine Veterinary Dental Association) Congress in Brighton, UK 🇬🇧

Elke was invited to present on the most common complications following dental extractions in horses and to join an expert panel discussion on this topic, as well as other fascinating subjects such as infundibular restorations and diastemata.

It was an inspiring and highly engaging congress, set in a beautiful location — with a memorable dinner at the Sea Life Centre as the perfect finishing touch! 🤩

We’re proud to see our team contributing to international knowledge sharing in equine dentistry!

Did you know? 🤔
A horse’s incisors can wear unevenly due to pain in the molars?

👉 When a horse is in pain, it will often avoid using one side of its mouth while chewing. As a result, the front incisors no longer wear evenly, leading to a diagonal bite.

💡 In this case, the horse was in pain due to a broken and inflamed molar. After this tooth was removed, the horse was able to chew normally again — and with a bit of help, the incisors can also become nicely straight again.

Does your horse also have slanted incisors?
🦷 Be sure to have its teeth checked!

ENG:
🐴 Is your horse losing weight during the winter? Don’t forget the teeth! 🦷

Do you notice that your horse is losing weight during winter, despite eating large amounts of hay? Then a dental issue may be an underlying cause.

In winter, horses obtain most of their nutrients from hay. If the hay cannot be properly chewed due to pain or discomfort in the mouth, nutrients are not released sufficiently. As a result, the digestive system cannot absorb them properly.

The result?
👉 A horse that eats tons of hay, yet still loses condition.

🔍 Do you recognize this in your horse?
Then be sure to have the teeth checked. A timely dental examination can make a world of difference for comfort, health, and overall condition.

NL:
🐴 Vermagert jouw paard in de winter? Denk dan ook aan het gebit! 🦷

📸 An Evening of Knowledge Sharing and Networking!

Our team of equine specialists had the pleasure of connecting with 40 referring veterinarians from Wallonia during an educational evening organised by Zoetis & Morette.

The lectures focused on practical, everyday tips for equine practice, which participants greatly appreciated. The rest of the evening offered a fantastic opportunity to discuss cases, exchange ideas, and enjoy great food in good company. 💙

A big thank you to Zoetis België for the excellent organisation, and a special shout-out to Céline Degrève for bringing us all together! 🙏

🌟 Morette vet check: answer 🌟

👉 With the windy autumn weather, sycamore seeds are flying into our horses' pastures. These seeds are toxic to horses and can cause severe 'Atypical Myopathy. This intoxication can become fatal in a few days.

🔎 Symptoms:
The symptoms can be very similar to colic.
* Difficulty walking, moving forward
* The horse lies down more often and has a stiff gait
* Hypothermia
* Red urine
* Sweating
➡️ If you recognize these symptoms, contact your treating veterinarian immediately.

⏳Upon arrival at the clinic, we can perform the necessary tests within minutes to confirm the diagnosis and set up supportive treatment for the horse. Unfortunately, there is currently no antidote, so prevention remains crucial.

💡 Other horses that have not yet been affected may benefit from a blood test to screen for early symptoms and paraffin oil and activated charcoal to limit the absorption of toxins.

⚠️ Watch your horses and your pastures in this windy weather!
✔️Remove your horses if there are seeds on your pasture or limit the time in the pasture to a maximum of 6 hours. It can fly over 100 meters in this weather.
✔️ Add sufficient food (good quality hay) and preferably on height in the pasture.

💡 Only the seeds of the Acer pseudoplatanus are toxic. The seeds of the Acer platanoides are not toxic.

📞 Contact our clinic if you have any questions

🌟 Morette vet check: answer 🌟

👉 Sarcoids are the most common skin tumors in horses. They are locally aggressive but do not metastasize. Several forms exist, ranging from small, wart-like lesions to large, ulcerating masses.

🔎 Sarcoids can occur anywhere on the skin but are most commonly seen on the head, around the eyes, the chest, the midline of the abdomen, and the legs. They usually don't cause pain but can be bothersome due to their location and are easily damaged or infected.

💡 Surgical excision (removal) is a commonly used method. This can be performed either with the horse standing under sedation or lying under general anesthesia, depending on the location and extent of the lesion.

💉 Sarcoids can recur. That's why electrochemotherapy is being used more frequently: a chemotherapeutic agent is introduced into the tissue and driven into the tumor cells using electric pulses. This increases the chances of successful treatment and reduces the risk of recurrence.

➡️ Careful selection of therapy and precise treatment are essential to prevent regrowth.
