While homemade food is a great way to ensure highest quality and freshness for your babies, here are some common mistakes to avoid while making homemade cat food :
1. Overfeeding Fish (Especially Raw Fish)
While fishes are staples in Bengali kitchens, too much fish—especially raw—can lead to thiamine deficiency, causing neurological problems.
2. Using Spices and Salt
Traditional Bengali dishes are rich in spices like turmeric, chili, and mustard oil—all harmful to cats. Even a pinch can upset their stomach or damage organs.
3. Feeding Only Rice and Fish
A common combo in Desi households, but rice alone lacks key nutrients and is too carb-heavy. Cats need high protein from meat and essential amino acids like taurine.
4. Giving Milk
Despite common belief, most cats are lactose intolerant. Milk can cause diarrhea and digestive issues.
5. Neglecting Supplements
Homemade food often misses out on crucial vitamins and minerals like calcium, vitamin D, and taurine. Without supplementation, this leads to long-term deficiencies. Feeding your cats vet approved cat food like Petman along with their regular diet, can help them overcome these deficiencies.
6. Feeding Bones or Leftovers
Cooked bones (like from chicken curry) can splinter and cause internal injuries. Leftovers often contain oils and spices harmful to cats.
7. Assuming Human Food = Cat Food
Cats are obligate carnivores, not small humans. Feeding them table food, no matter how lovingly cooked, doesn’t meet their needs unless carefully balanced.
Tip: Always consult a vet before switching your cat's dietary plans, and use balanced, vet-approved recipes made specifically for cats.
