Before we launched Chonk, we thought the main problem with our cat food market was that some importers were involved in syndication, making everything more expensive and harder to get.
But one experience totally changed how we saw things ๐ฃ
One morning, our team was in Katabon looking at pet shops for packaging ideas for our cat food. Not the design, but the shape and structure of the packaging.
After searching for a while, we found a packaging we liked - Summit 10. We wanted to bring it back to the office to study it further.
So we asked the shopkeeper, "How much?"
He gave us a price and went on and on about how low it was, saying no one could beat it.
Since no other shops in the area sold that brand, we couldnโt check the price anywhere else, and online searches didnโt show anything, as the brand wasn't popular then.
But with all his talk about "honest pricing," we decided to buy it.
A couple of weeks later though, we found the same packet in another store.
It was 25% cheaper. And apparently, that's the real price of this cat food.
Imagine how betrayed we felt ๐
This taught us that the problem wasn't just with the importers. Some pet shops were also behaving unethically, tricking cat parents and taking advantage of their hard-earned money.
It was a wake-up call for us to put strong rules in place to make sure Chonk customers never got treated that way.
Like we stick to MRP, and if a shop doesn't follow it, we simply wonโt sell to them anymore.
In the end, we realized that the local pet food market has a lot more problems to be solved that we thought ๐ฎโ๐จ
