The ostrich is the world’s largest living bird and, like other flightless birds, has anatomical adaptations suited to life on the ground. Unlike most flying birds, its sternum lacks the prominent keel (carina) that provides a broad attachment area for the powerful pectoral muscles used in flight.
However, the absence of a keel alone does not explain its flightlessness; ostriches also have relatively reduced flight musculature, modified wings, and a body plan strongly specialized for running. Their powerful, long legs and two-toed feet enable them to reach speeds of around 72 km/h (45 mph), making running their primary form of rapid locomotion.

The okapi (Okapia johnstoni) has an unusually long, muscular and prehensile tongue that it uses not only to grasp leaves but also for grooming. Its darkly pigmented tongue can extend roughly 25 cm beyond the snout, allowing the animal to reach and clean its own eyes, eyelids, ears and other parts of its body.
Modern anatomical research confirms extensive dark pigmentation and specialized papillae on the okapi tongue, adaptations associated with its feeding and grooming functions. The okapi is a member of the giraffe family (Giraffidae), making the giraffe its closest living relative despite its zebra-like stripes.

A giraffe has a remarkably long, muscular and prehensile tongue that can reach approximately 45–50 cm (18–20 inches) in length. It uses this highly flexible tongue, together with its mobile lips, to grasp and strip leaves from trees and shrubs, including thorny Vachellia and Senegalia species formerly classified as Acacia. The tongue can maneuver between thorns, while specialized thickened papillae and other oral adaptations help protect the mouth during browsing.

Giraffes commonly use their tongue to pull foliage toward the mouth, where their lower teeth and tough oral tissues help strip leaves from branches. The dark pigmentation of the tongue is often suggested to provide protection against prolonged sunlight exposure, but this proposed function has not been firmly established scientifically. Gibbons are exceptionally specialized for life in the forest canopy, with brachiation— swinging beneath branches using the arms— being an important form of locomotion. Their elongated forelimbs, highly mobile shoulder complex, long forearms, and specialized musculature allow them to move efficiently between overhead supports. Their forelimb muscles, particularly the shoulder rotators, shoulder flexors and extensors, elbow flexors, and wrist flexors, are adapted to generate and control the forces required during suspension and swinging.

Gibbons also have relatively low distal forelimb mass and long tendons, features that help their limbs move rapidly while facilitating pendulum-like movement. This combination of anatomy and biomechanics allows gibbons to exploit momentum and move through the canopy with relatively low mechanical cost.

The skull of the spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) is highly specialized for powerful biting and bone cracking.
