Don’t look away.
Make a difference instead.
This is a cautionary tale of what happens when male dogs aren’t neutered and are left to roam.
One person stopped to help this dog, and we responded to her call as quickly as we could. When we arrived, we found an emaciated, suffering dog. He had clearly once been in someone’s care; a ragged, frayed collar was still wrapped around his neck.
As we tried to secure him, he stumbled into oncoming traffic. It was a tense, heartbreaking moment; we genuinely feared he would be hit right before our eyes. Fortunately, we managed to coax him into the car safely and rushed straight to the emergency team at Central Vet, who were ready and waiting for us.
Sadly, all we could offer him was two tins of sausages and a humane, peaceful passage out of this world, free from suffering.
Attitudes toward animal care must change. We shouldn’t have to respond to calls like this regularly. Individuals need to take responsibility for their pets, and community options must be available to help them do so.
