Urban Legend: Protection-trained dogs are dangerous.

Truth: You probably wouldn’t even recognize one if you saw it. ��This dog in the photo is protection-trained. �Would you have known that if I hadn’t told you? �No — you wouldn’t. ��If you saw him lying calmly on a café terrace in Helsinki, walking in green parks, shopping with me, traveling on ferries, waiting outside a grocery store, or playing with children at sports events — you’d just think:
“What a well-behaved, lovely dog.” ��And you’d be right. ��That’s why I find it strange when people start questioning whether someone should own a protection dog. Or suggest that protection training should be banned. ��If we want to ban dangerous dogs, we’d have to start by banning every single breed that has the capacity to defend itself, its owner, territory, or resources. That would include most breeds — and all mixes of them. ��But banning everything possibly harmful can not be the solution. We all understand that. ��After 17 years of working professionally with dogs, here’s what I know for sure:
�👉 The most dangerous dog isn’t a trained protection dog. It’s an untrained dog in the hands of someone who doesn’t understand it. ��If we truly cared about safety, we’d focus on teaching our dogs good manners and self-control in real-world situations. ��So next time someone claims that protection dogs or training them should be banned, ask yourself:
�Would you rather walk past a trained and well-behaving protection dog like mine, or an untrained, overstimulated pet dog that’s never been taught to cope with the real world? ��Let’s stop spreading the myth. �A trained dog — no matter the sport — is always safer than an untrained one.
