🐶 When can I take my puppy out in public?
Puppies are curious and eager to explore, but it’s important to balance socialisation with health protection. Most vets recommend not putting your puppy on the ground in public places until they’ve had their full vaccination course, usually around 16 weeks of age (after their final puppy vaccine).
Before that time, puppies can still safely socialise! You can:
• Carry them in your arms 🐾
• Use a pram or carrier
• Invite vaccinated dogs to your home
• Expose them to different sights, sounds, and people
Public places such as parks, footpaths and pet-store floors can carry parvovirus (parvo). Parvo is a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening virus that affects unvaccinated puppies. It attacks the gastrointestinal system, causing severe vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration and can sadly be fatal even with treatment.
✔️ Rule of thumb: Wait until 1–2 weeks after the final vaccination before letting your puppy walk on the ground in public spaces.
If you’re unsure, always check with your vet, as vaccination schedules can vary.
Healthy puppy + safe socialisation = the best start to life! 🐕✨
