π Fun Fact Friday π
Why do some cats turn their noses up to cold foodβπΊ
Ever wondered why your cat ignores wet food straight from the fridge but dives in when itβs a bit warmer? Science has the answer!
A catβs taste receptors work best at around 30Β°c, about the same temperature as their tongue. When food is served cold, their ability to taste it drops. But if their food is warmed up a little, youβre turning the flavour dial way up too!
When feeding your cat wet food, itβs best to serve it at room temperature so the food is more appealing and natural for them to eat. If the food is stored in the refrigerator to keep it fresh, take it out a little while before a mealtime to let it warm naturally or gently heat it up. When heating food, always stir and check the temperature carefully for hot spots that could burn your catβs mouth, and allow heated food to cool back to room temperature before serving. This tip is especially helpful for fussy eaters or cats that are under the weather or unwell.
So next time your cat is giving food the cold shoulder, swap fridge-fresh for room temperature, or try a gentle warm-up, to make mealtimes more mouthwatering!
If your cat isnβt eating as they normally would or appears to have become βpickyβ with their food, please book a consultation with our vets. π
