Jax is one of those dogs that can have mixed feelings about affection and being cuddled. He will initiate it sometimes, other times he will decide that he’s uncomfortable and get a bit funny to create space. Occasionally he will initiate affection and then growl at anyone else that approaches. This behaviour starts creeping into the realm of resource guarding, but could also just be that he is trying to create space because he feels stuck and doesn’t have the skills to calmly resolve the problem.

Sometimes I’ve seen Jax go to greet a stranger, but when he’s interacting with them he becomes a bit uncomfortable and his body language changes, sometimes he will then come and hide behind me. He has improved greatly with this purely by me just interacting with the people in a friendly way and heavily praising Jax.

I want to create a bit of structure and clarity around affection and cuddles. I want his family to be able to invite Jax into their space to initiate affection, but also be able to ask Jax to move away and end the interaction on their terms.

I also want Jax to learn to accept some discomfort around restraint and even feeling a little trapped and try to change the emotion around it by helping him understand that nothing bad is going to happen and that the interaction can end in a pleasant way.

Sometimes I feel conflicted about working through things like this with a dog, and I’m choosing to address it with Jax, because he does enjoy affection. If Jax just straight up didn’t like people touching him, then we would make that a permanent rule for Jax, probably even get him a little harness or collar letting people know to give him space.

And if through working on this I could see that he wasn’t responding well, then I would abandon it.

Jax decided to get a bit spicy with Tomi last night, having a bit of a chomp at her while she walked past him and so we are introducing the muzzle.

We need to safely recreate the scenario that is triggering him to be able to work on the behaviour.

There’s also an unpredictability to what’s triggering him because Tomi has walked past him while he’s resting plenty of times without incident.

As he makes more progress and feels more comfortable he’s starting to show his true colours and the full extent of his behavioural issues. And this is what I need him to do so that I can help him. Otherwise we are left with management approaches and anxious owners wondering when that management is going to fail.

I’m treating the muzzle training the same way as the nail trims, creating acceptance and introducing a consequence for trying to remove it early to get over that hurdle now rather than weeks of conditioning with food and games.

All in all Jax is making huge progress, I’m really happy with how he’s going, but now we are getting into some of his more trickier issues to deal with.

And Tomi’s all good, they reconciled quickly, not her first rodeo with snappy dogs.

I was watching a lady with a highly reactive Kelpie pup this morning and really wanted to go and offer some advice, but I’ve learned to wait until people come to me for help.

If that lady is following this page or someone knows her, you should get in touch because now is the best time to intervene before the pup gets much bigger.

If a puppy is showing that level of reactivity at such a young age, there is a big genetic component and getting professional help is essential.

Jax has made tonnes of progress with his reactivity, not pulling on lead, being calm in public and also independence (Separation Anxiety).

Still some way to go, but nice to enjoy a trip into town with him.

Jax has some Resource Guarding issues to work through, it’s mostly around space and people that he guards, but we are setting rules for all resources because there’s been issues in the past.
