BABY MAGPIE
ADVICE ON WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A BABY BIRD
Its spring so it's baby bird season. This little cutie is our first baby magpie for 2017. Unfortunately, he won't be the last. We expect to take in many many more of these little ones over the next few months. They require warmth, fluids, a specialised and varied diet and intensive feeding every 2 hours or so.
YOU CAN HELP US HELP THEM
****young birds spend some time on the ground during fledging so unless the bird is clearly injured or in immediate danger ie on or near a road, please don't pick them up. Their parents are around and will keep an eye on them
****if you do find an injured or orphaned bird, keep them warm, dark and quiet-away from children and pets-and please call us or any wildlife shelter/rescue group STRAIGHT AWAY. The sooner you call, the better chance they have of surviving. Baby birds need intensive specialised care and can die from cold, stress and incorrect feeding within hours. Every year we see many baby birds, mostly magpies and ducklings, die needlessly because people keep them and don't call until it's too late.
****watch out for young birds on the roads. At this time of year, many baby birds are killed on our roads. Remember they are inexperienced and dont understand the danger cars pose. Don't assume they will get out of the way. Slow down so they can get off the road safely.
THANK YOU FOR CARING
