Fresh local pumpkins are currently being devoured by all the piggies along with their usual diet. And there's a distinct shine on their coats which I'm attributing to those pumpkins LOL.

With hay being unavailable, chaff is replacing it. Picked up some export grade Nitschke lucerne & oaten chaff in Gordonvale & surprisingly the pigs love it!

Must acknowledge the lovely farmers - Sandrine & Richard - who provide all our pumpkins at a super special price

THE PROGRESS OF THE NEWBIES FROM CAIRNS
The three girls are relaxing into their new location & there's less bullying of the daughter Rose.

With a variety of foods & fresh grass, they are all continuing to gain weight.

DAISY has gone from 861 grams to 939 grams (78 gram gain).
DAFFODIL has gone from 705 grams to 765 grams (60 gram gain).

ROSE (most emaciated) has gone from 497 grams to 583 grams (86 gram gain & the largest gain of all 3 pigs). She still has a wet chin - a sign of malocclusion - but I have manually checked her molars & they appear not too bad, so am hoping the wet chin could be more associated with ill-health.

Currently offering a selection of dry food to boost protein & vit C levels & the girls are pretty impressed! Fresh parsley & strips of corn husk are going down well too :-)

FINDING OUT WHAT THEY LOVE TO EAT
The 3 new rescued girls from Cairns definitely have "commercial food" tastes with lettuce & corn being the favourites.
Have noticed some "bunny hops" which indicate a vitamin C deficiency. Fresh grass being provided multiple times per day along with warm Vetafarm critta-care.

Happy tp report an increase in weight for all three.
Mum (Daisy) has gained 50 grams, Daughter 1 (Daffodil) has gained 30 grams & tiny Daughter 2 (Rose) has gained an amazing 57 grams. Daffodil will most likely do better once out of quarantine & placed in with the main herd (she's being bullied at times by mum & sis).

Rose has some signs of malocclusion but no vet visit happening until the cyclone passes & the roads are safer for the 4 hour round trip! She is managing grass well & that's encouraging.

Incoming: second daughter from Cairns trio
Health alert: severely malnourished (less than 500 grams), potential UTI, dentals seem OK but will require molar check
Carrying no body condition, "skin & bones", crusty eyes
Initial treatment: antibiotics, endless food (fresh grass, Cavy Cuisine, fresh high protein chaff, variety of vege)
Will sup-feed if no immediate weight gain
Note hunched position

Prolonged wet weather has resulted in no available rhodes grass bales. Some southern stock has made its way here. Misty Mountain currently combining fresh grass with hay cubes (usually teff, but take what you can find!) and some southern hay.

These two - the bag of hay cubes & one compressed teff hay bale - cost $100. The bale of teff cost $48.50 & lasts for one day. The hay cubes last 1 1/2 days. Rescue is not cheap.
