With H5 bird flu continuing to spread through Australian wildlife, many pet owners are understandably wondering what they can do to keep their animals safe.
The good news is that the risk to most pets remains low, but a few simple precautions can help reduce their exposure.
- Keep cats contained and away from wild birds.
- Keep dogs on a leash, particularly around beaches and other areas with wildlife, and don't let them sniff, touch or eat sick or dead animals.
- Keep pet food and water where wild birds can't access them.
- If you have backyard chickens or pet birds, take extra steps to prevent contact with wild birds and keep their food and water protected.
If you come across sick or dead wildlife, don't touch it and keep your pets away. You can report it to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
