Run your hand down the front of your dachshund's chest and you will find a bone that juts out further than it does on almost any other dog. 🐾

That ridge is called the keel, or the prosternum, and on a dachshund it sits forward of the front legs like the bow of a small boat. Once you have felt it you will start seeing it in every photograph you take of her, a hard little point leading the way.

It is there for a reason. Working underground meant staying down in a tunnel far longer than any sprint would allow, and that takes air. A correctly built dachshund carries a deep chest that reaches roughly to the elbow and a lung capacity that looks almost absurd on a dog this size, and the forward keel gives the chest muscles the leverage to haul the whole body along a tight passage. The oval shape of that ribcage matters too, because a round chest simply would not fit.

This is my favourite thing about the breed. Nothing about that shape is an accident or a design flaw. Every odd proportion is a solved problem from about four hundred years ago, still trotting around your kitchen and asking for cheese. 🧀
