Just a little reminder for everyone getting out there!
With the fallow rut just about to kick off, make sure you know the correct cuts to cape your deer out.
Cut 1 runs up the spine to the back of the head, stopping about 100mm from the back of the antlers, or as far as is needed to remove the head.
Cut 2 goes around the entire deer, and should always be atleast 150mm behind the front leg. Aim for the middle of the deer and you will have plenty
Cuts 3 and 4 are around each front leg, at the first joint or below it.
And please take your time, extra holes from poor knife work take time to fix, and kilograms of extra meat left on can cause tanning issues.
Get the cape off and cooled as soon as you can, then get it to your taxidermist!
DO NOT put salt on until the face has been caped out and ears, nose and lips are all turned.
