It is a big thing for dogs to have to accept another unknown dog so its a situation not to rush at the time. Try these hints to make for a hassle free introduction;
1. Neutral areas both dogs don't know well or have never been to so they don't territorialize it. (not backyards or walking areas they know)
2. Start with walking past each other (parallel) & watch the body language
3. If inside the home remove all toys, food.. and restrict access by closing doors to bedrooms ect..
4. Limit all rewarding/affection from you - keep the environment emotionally neutral for both dogs
5. Lastly just be patient, take it slowly and with limited emotional output from you means dogs will look to you for guidance.
Happy Multiple Dog Home😊🐶🐶

Seen this time and time again ... forced interaction, which off leash dog parks are notorious for & many puppy schools CREATE reactivity. Your puppy should be taught to ignore & choose You right from the start. No excited puppy play with other puppies/dogs

The Answer is
1. Exposure (to see).
2. Acclimate (to get used to) SUPER IMPORTANT STEP.
3. Reinforce NOT interacting with the puppy/dog.
4. Choosing to focus on you when a puppy/dog is there.
THEN
A supervised puppy/dog interaction can be attempted

Pounce complained he doesn't get enough social media time😁out & about at the park. BTW due to Pounce having oestoarthritis causing his feet to turn in & roll he doesnt walk on his pads but on the sides of his feet causing callous & sores. The boots are to protect his feet as he wears padded bandages & wraps under those everyday❤️

Love sharing these from ABC Dogs NZ as they are a simple/effective way for dog owners to understand their reactive dog .... especially reactive dogs who has access to street facing windows all day long - self reinforced behaviour all day long!

Fear ➡️Reactivity➡️ More Fear… the cycle continues.

That person walked away or backed off after the bark.
Excellent result....for your dog.
It "worked".
Those barks and lunges "made" that threat back off or move on.

It can also work in a different way.
When we remove them.
When a dog is barking or lunging (oh that word always looks so wrong written down)...but when we remove them, the same connections can be made.

The reaction got the desired result.
Why wouldn't they repeat it !

It was reinforced.
They got the distance from something they were very unsure of.

What is reinforced will be repeated.
