COMMUNITY NOTICE: Calicivirus Vaccination (protect your pet rabbits!)

Throughout Greater Sydney, European rabbits continue to impact agricultural areas and natural bushland, degrading important habitat for native wildlife. To help manage these impacts, the NSW Government’s Local Land Services, Camden Council and private landholders are working together on an annual coordinated regional pest rabbit control program in March 2026.

The program will include use of the biological control agent–RHDV1 (calicivirus)– in Camden Council’s high value nature conservation areas. This virus is not harmful to native animals or domestic pets, other than rabbits.

To keep your pet rabbits safe, please ensure they are vaccinated against this virus. Vaccinations should be completed before 20 February 2026 and can be arranged through local veterinarians.

For more information, visit bit.ly/Camden-Pest-Rabbits or contact Council on 13 22 63.

If you are a private landholder and currently have a problem with European rabbits on your property, please contact Local Land Services on 1300 795 299 to register your interest in this program.

🌡️ Heat Stroke in Pets – Know the Signs & Act Fast! 🌡️

With the weather heating up, dogs and cats are at a much higher risk of heat stroke — a life-threatening emergency that can escalate in minutes.
Please keep your pets safe and watch for early warning signs.

⚠️ Signs of Heat Stroke:
• Excessive panting or drooling
• Bright red gums or tongue
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Weakness, wobbliness or collapse
• Rapid heart rate
• Seizures (in severe cases)

🔥 High-Risk Situations:
• Being left in cars — even for a minute
• Outdoor exercise in hot/humid weather
• Long-haired, brachycephalic (short-nosed), overweight, senior, or unwell pets
• Concrete, asphalt and direct sun exposure

💨 What to Do IMMEDIATELY:
• Move your pet to a cool, shaded area
• Offer small amounts of cool (not ice-cold) water
• Cool with wet towels or gently run cool water over them
• Turn on a fan or air-con
• Contact your vet immediately — heat stroke is an emergency even if they start to improve

☀️ Prevention is always best:
• Walk pets early morning or late evening
• Provide shade and plenty of fresh water
• Never leave pets in cars
• Monitor brachycephalic breeds closely

Stay safe this summer — and keep your furry friends cool, hydrated and protected! 💛🐾

Yesterday we celebrated the life of our little girl, Sarah. She was our little ray of sunshine, always brightening up our day, hoping for some food to be dropped. We were blessed to have adopted Sarah three years ago from a client. Margaret, her previous owner, had passed away, and our little girl knew she had to say goodbye; she came to live with us. Embracing life, she would adapt to any situation. She would greet new friends and family at the front door. She bravely battled heart problems for the last three years, which caused a few other complications, but she was a true fighter. When we thought she was sick, she just bounced back time after time. RIP Sarah, I hope you find Margaret again ###

⚠️SYDNEY HEAT STROKE ALERT⚠️

Hot weather is forecast tomorrow onwards in parts of Sydney. Familiarise yourself and your family with the dangers of heat to pets.

Heat stroke is common during high temperatures and is is a serious, life-threatening condition that can cause death or permanent damage to your pet’s internal organs. The window between the first signs and a critical emergency is very short, so knowing what to look for is essential.

Signs of heat stroke include: lethargy, excessive panting or difficulty breathing & sudden collapse.

While all dogs are at risk, flat-faced brachycephalic breeds (like bulldogs and pugs) are particularly vulnerable. Their short snouts make it harder for them to cool down by panting, so extra caution is needed on hot or humid days like tomorrow.

Keep your dog indoors in a cool, shaded area & ensure there’s ALWAYS fresh water available. Avoid walking or exercising your dog.

If you suspect your pet is overheating or suffering from heat stroke, proceed to SASH 24/7 Emergency immediately.

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION
Hi,
I’m George and I’m 14 weeks old. My siblings Gladys and Gabriel have found their furever home and I’m looking for that too. I live with my foster mummy Diane who has taken great care of me. I am desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and come with lifetime registration. I’m happy to play with my toys, lie indoors in the warm sun and be fed lots of yummy food. I enjoy the company of other kitties so would be best suited to a home with another kitty for company. Would you like to meet me? I’m in Cobbitty with my foster mummy ready to go home with you. For more info please contact Diane on 0402 345 431 😽
