Last week, Nurse Ash and Dr Erin travelled to Aurukun to provide some much needed veterinary care to the local community.

The team had a busy and rewarding week, carrying out desexing procedures, health checks and vaccinations for dogs and cats. They also finished the week with a leg amputation back in Weipa for a dog who had a severely injured her leg there.

Thank you to the Aurukun community for having us, we look forward to returning again soon!

Nothing melts our hearts quite like a bucket full of puppies! 🐶😍
These adorable little ones visited us for their very first vaccinations and health checks, and they were all as brave as they were cute 💙🐾

Umai recently visited us after developing difficulty and discomfort while urinating. Following a thorough physical examination, urinalysis, and radiographs of her bladder, the cause of her symptoms was quickly identified—bladder stones.

Umai was promptly scheduled for surgery, where a cystotomy was successfully performed to remove the stones. She recovered well from the procedure and was able to return home later that day with pain relief and antibiotics to keep her comfortable during her recovery.

We're delighted to report that Umai is doing wonderfully. She is now urinating normally, is pain-free, and back to her happy, playful self.

If your pet is straining to urinate, having accidents in the house, passing blood in their urine, or showing signs of discomfort while toileting, it's important to seek veterinary attention as soon as possible. Urinary problems can progress rapidly and may become serious if left untreated.

Fact Check Friday - Shining a light on the notorious heartworm! 🪱

1. Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitos from animal to animal, making it extremely difficult to track and prevent with environment control alone.
2. Heartworm can grow up to 12 inches in length within the blood vessels and heart of the infected animal
3. There are often no clinical signs of infection in a pet until the late stages of the disease. Clinical signs include weight loss, coughing, lethargy, and shortness of breath or energy after play.
4. Heartworm disease can affect all organs including kidneys and liver
5. Prevention can be started in puppies from as early as six weeks of age (depending on chosen product - always ensure product has been approved for your puppies age)

🐾 Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) 🐾

Recently, we have diagnosed several cases of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) in cats within our community.

FIV is a serious viral disease that weakens a cat’s immune system, making them more vulnerable to infections, dental disease, and other long-term health problems.

How is it spread?
FIV is most commonly spread through cat fights and bite wounds, particularly among roaming and un-desexed male cats.

How can you protect your cat?
- There is an FIV vaccine available that can help protect cats at risk of exposure. Talk to our team to see if the FIV vaccine is suitable for your cat and lifestyle.
- Keep them safe inside: Indoor cats or cats in secure outdoor enclosures are far less likely to encounter other cats, become involved in fights, or be exposed to infectious diseases. Containment also protects them from vehicles, predators, parasites, and other environmental dangers.
- Desexing your cat and having regular veterinary check-ups significantly reduces their risk and helps them live a longer, healthier life.

While FIV positive cats can sometimes live long lives, they will require significant ongoing veterinary care and monitoring.

Don’t let heartworm give your dog heartache this month 💔

We are proud have partnered with Zoetis for the month of July to offer FREE heartworm testing for all eligible patients! 👏

Heartworm is a serious disease that can cause heart failure, lung disease, organ damage and death in pets. Heartworm is spread through mosquitos, making it particularly prevalent in all North Queensland homes and properties. Treatment of heartworm is often very costly and risky for the pet, making prevention much better than the cure 🪱

If you have had patchy heartworm coverage, have a pet that is not currently on prevention or would like to make the change to Proheart SR-12 vaccination for your pet, now is the time 💉

To be eligible for free testing, your pet must:
✅ Not be on any heartworm prevention or have lapsed coverage
✅ Must receive a Proheart SR-12 injection on the same day

What happens at the time of your appointment?
🩺 After a thorough health check with one of our fabulous veterinarians our team will take a sample of your pet’s blood to run a brief test in clinic – usually only taking around 10 minutes!
🩺 Afterwards, our team will report results to you. If clear, your pet will receive their Proheart vaccination. If not, our team will discuss next steps with you.
