We get asked this one regularly so I feel it’s important to explain to people that are unaware because they are not breeders .
When we are placing a litter of pups to their new families. There is ALWAYS going to be a Last puppy to place.
And often people will say to us
“Why is it last, Is it a Runt?”
Firstly- there is ALWAYS going to be and has to be a Last puppy to find its home. They can’t all go first.
This is ABSOLUTELY NOT and indication of its quality. Fact is 9/10 it’s probably the best puppy , because good chance it was the breeders pick that we either didn’t want to send on because it stood out from the rest so we have not placed it yet. Because temperament wise we may have felt it had more potential for something else.
Or for the other part it just simply was last and is the same as its siblings in every way. They can’t all be selected first .
Most puppies are selected by families based on colour or gender . And those preferences from people are different every time so maybe this litter it’s the lightest puppy selected last, maybe it’s the darkest, maybe it’s a boy because more people wanted girls etc . But non of these reasons have anything to do with the puppies quality.
Now I’d like to address the “Runt”
This I really wish to educate people on because it’s a very strange statement people make out of lack of knowledge and that’s because as a breeder of 20yrs I can tell you now Runts in a litter are Rare . Fact is most litter do NOT Have a runt , we breed pedigree dogs with high focus on health, we just don’t see them often and the rare occasion we have a puppy that is born small or struggling to develop at the same rate as its siblings I can 100% guarantee you it is NOT being made available to just anyone and those puppies are not going to be place like the others, they are very closely monitored and often placed to people with a higher understanding of care. In 20yrs I can name these puppies on one hand . We just don’t see Runts. We work hard to ensure the absolute best outcome for our breed and we raise our puppies with strict standards.
So please when you are ready to welcome a puppy into your life don’t hesitate just because it’s the last puppy.
