🚨 COLIC IN HORSES – A TRUE EMERGENCY 🚨
Colic remains a leading cause of death in horses and must always be taken seriously. Early veterinary intervention can make all the difference to the outcome for your horse.
With the recent drop in temperatures, REVS has seen an increase in colic cases across our region. We urge all horse owners to remain vigilant and monitor their horses closely for colic signs including:
▪️ Pawing
▪️ Rolling
▪️ Looking back at the flank
▪️ Loss of appetite
▪️ Restlessness
▪️ Sweating
▪️ Repeatedly lying down and getting up
❗Importantly do NOT attempt to self-medicate your horse. Giving medications without veterinary advice can mask symptoms, delay diagnosis, and in some cases make the situation worse. If you suspect colic, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Another important part of being prepared is having transport capability in place for your horse. Some colic cases require intensive in-clinic treatment, and time is critical. If you do not own a horse float, we recommend organising ahead of time:
✅ Someone you can borrow a float from
✅ A local float hire option
✅ A friend or family member who can assist with transport in an emergency
If you are concerned your horse may be showing signs of colic, contact REVS on (02) 5954 9972.
