Let’s talk about backyard breeders. And no, we’re not going to sugar‐coat this. We are furious.
Every week, we see more heartbreaking posts: dogs dumped, neglected, surrendered to us, for us to fix. And more often than not, the common thread? Backyard breeders. These people are not animal lovers. They are not “just trying to help others get a cute puppy.” They are irresponsible, greedy, and dangerous. And we’ve had enough.
Backyard breeders are the ones who decide that their dog is “so cute” that they just have to breed her. They don’t do proper health checks. They don’t verify lineage. They don’t care about temperament. They’re not registered. They don’t give a toss about where the puppies end up. They just want the cash—fast, easy, and dirty.
And then what happens?
The pups that don’t sell get dumped. The mum dog is bred back-to-back, treated like a machine, and tossed aside when she’s “done her job.” Or even worse, she dies from complications that proper care could have prevented. The pups that do sell often end up with health issues, behavioral problems, or in shelters when the novelty wears off - because they weren’t bred responsibly and the new owners weren’t vetted properly.
Meanwhile, rescues and pounds are bursting at the seams. Dogs are being euthanised because there’s simply no space left. And still—still—backyard breeders pump out litter after litter, with zero regard for the bigger picture. For the suffering. For the lives at stake.
We’re not just saddened by it. We’re angry.
We’re angry that the laws around breeding are so weak and barely enforced. We’re angry that people still support these backyard breeders, whether out of ignorance or indifference. We’re angry for the animals who have no voice. For the mama dogs with sagging bellies and vacant eyes. For the pups that never get the chance to be loved because they were brought into this world by someone who didn’t give a damn.
So here’s our message:
Stop buying dogs off Gumtree. Off Facebook. Off some dodgy breeder with a backyard full of kennels. Stop supporting people who see animals as nothing more than dollar signs.
Do your research. Adopt if you can. And if you must buy, go through an ethical, registered breeder who treats their dogs like family and gives a damn about where those pups end up.
Because every time someone buys from a backyard breeder, another dog in a shelter dies waiting for a home.
Enough is enough.
