Did you know?

When guinea pigs are born they are already highly developed, like "mini-adults"!

Babies are born with fur, open eyes, developed teeth, and claws, allowing them to walk, run, and eat solid food within hours - although they do nurse for several weeks first.

This is known as being "precocial", while other species such as mice and rabbits are "altricial" - requiring extended parental care.

Rabbits love to chew…on just about anything!

While it can be frustrating to find bunny bites in your home, chewing isn’t “bad behaviour.” It’s instinctual and essential for dental wear, enrichment and mimicking natural foraging behaviours.

Instead of trying to stop the behaviour, the key is to redirect it toward safe rabbit chew toys and natural materials that satisfy their urge without putting their health at risk.

Safe chewable materials include:
• Grass hay
• Certain types of untreated wood
• Dried apple sticks
• Cardboard
• Bamboo
• Willow and other woody vines
• Plant-based fibres like seagrass and raffia

Important safety factors to remember:
• Grass hay should be available in unlimited quantities; it’s the only chew material that’s meant to be eaten in large amounts.
• Wood, cardboard, and fibres are enrichment toys, not food. If your rabbit is eating noticeable amounts, remove the item and consult your vet.
• Always source chew toys from trusted pet suppliers. Sticks from your backyard can harbour mould, pesticides, or parasites.

Adequate water intake is essential for your small pet’s health! It keeps them hydrated and helps with cooling, it ensure the contents of their gut have enough moisture, and it keeps their urine dilute to prevent bladder sludge.

Rabbit’s require 125-375mL of water per day, while guinea pigs need between 50 and 150mL per day.

Rabbits can drink from both water bowls and bottles. However, research has shown that they may prefer bowls as it more closely mimics how they would drink naturally from ponds and streams. Both a bowl and a water bottle should be provided.

While individual guinea pigs may prefer one type of water source over another, it is important to provide two different sources of drinking water to guinea pigs, just like rabbits.

Water should always be fresh so it should be checked daily and changed if required.
