🌾 It’s Grass Seed Season! 🌾

As the weather warms up from late spring through summer, those pesky grass seeds start showing up everywhere. These tiny, barbed hitchhikers only move one way, ➑️forward. Once they latch on, they can cause big trouble for your pet.

Even a single seed can burrow deep into the skin, causing pain, inflammation, and infection β€” and in some cases, even severe eye injuries.

Grass seeds have been found almost anywhere on a dog’s body, including:
🐾 Feet
🐾 Chest/stomach
🐾 Ge***al area
🐾 Ears
🐾 Eyes
🐾 Nose

Watch out for symptoms like:
πŸ‘‰ Swelling or redness
πŸ‘‰ Licking or chewing one area excessively
πŸ‘‰ Discharge or small blisters
πŸ‘‰ Missing fur patches
πŸ‘‰ Violent or constant sneezing
πŸ‘‰ Pawing at the nose or eyes
πŸ‘‰ Head shaking or tilting

Many pet owners will agree β€” no matter how carefully you check your dog, all it takes is one roll in the grass or one curious sniff for a seed to sneak in.

Dental Series 🦷 !

Firstly lets start naming the old fashion "Dental" more appropriately. We more accurately refer to this procedure as a Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment procedure. Why? Because that is what we are actually doing. We are thoroughly assessing your pets teeth under a general anaesthetic to determine the state of health they are in. This has several parts to it and today we will discuss dental x rays.

Why do we always recommend taking x rays of every tooth, on every patient that with do a COHAT on? 60% of the tooth lies below the gum, meaning we cannot see what is going on. Teeth can look and probe perfectly fine, but under the gum lies hidden problems. Our pets are not able to speak to us and tell us when a tooth is sore, and more often than not dental disease goes unnoticed and our animals end up in chronic discomfort.

Here is a quiz for you

Which of these teeth is dead? Can you see any difference in the appearance of these teeth? They are all upper incisors on a dog.

(Handy hint- I could not tell that there was a problem with any of these teeth by their appearance or by probing)

Answer: The circled tooth, 202 or upper left incisor is dead. How do I know this. The dental x rays showed me. Can you see the black line in the middle of each tooth? This is the root canal. As animals get older the root canal becomes more narrow. So all root canals should be approximately the same width within the same patient. If a tooth dies, the root canal can no longer shrink and so will show up on x ray as wider than the surrounding teeth. From studies we know that 92% of dead teeth will cause a problem and therefore need treatment. The treatment is either extraction of the affected tooth, or a root canal (yes our pets can have root canals). This case is just one example of why dental x rays are important and should never be excluded when having your pets teeth assessed.

Stay tuned for more dental cases in my dental series posts over the coming months.
