Worming can be such a drama,

I'm very lucky that I teach all of my foals to LOVE worming tubes.

However, I've had a load of horses here for training that we're tube shy, or needle shy.

One in particular am OTT that the moment she saw a tube she stood on her back legs.

Once she learnt the three 3 cues.
Head down, flex to me, open your mouth,
Have some stockgain or molasses.
Worming her was no longer a fight.

It was a game she knew how to win.

Replacing the molasses with wormer was no issue. And she went home a happy horse.

The key here a bit like everything is prior preparation.

The term we use for this kind of training is playing pony club.

And what I mean by that is, accidentally training.

When you're a kid and you take your horse to pony club, you get to the arena and you say.... Erhhhh I forgot my helmet, so you walk back to the car and get it.

Return to the arena oh no I forgot my sausage roll, so you walk over to the canteen? Grab that before you head back to the arena, pony still in hand.

When you get to the arena you realize you're not in the right saddle for jumping. So you go back and sort out your gear before you head back to the arena.

I call this pony clubbing a horse, these days I do it intentionally for the endurance horses it teaches them how to get around camp and lower their heart rate.

But I also love it for the young ones, ultimately it prepares my horses for the real world.

Puppa chicko, my daughter has big dreams for this Little pony.

It's important to not let your big goals negatively impact your training.
Sometimes we can be so blindsided by the dream that we forget to enjoy all of the 1% improvements that that horse is making every minute.

And if we forget to notice them and we don't reward them, we get further from that big goal.

Today Chico made such huge progress. He didn't just improve by 1%. He improved by 50 - 100%

Does your horse pick up their foot on cue? or do you pick up your horse's foot for him?

This is the big Dolly girl :)

She is learning to pick up her feet, the more she gets handled, the more we work her mind the easier this will get.

This is my pickup foot cue

One finger is all I should need to lift a thousand kilo horse's foot.

(She's not quite a thousand kilos) But she is big.

Say nothing do nothing. Be nothing.

No, just kidding.... Today was all about doing nothing. One of the hardest things I try and teach people who want to do everything, he's get really good at doing nothing.

If a horse is really good at doing nothing, it will be really good at doing something.

Itchy scratchy foot - today tilly pony literally held up her back foot in the air I thought she was dying.

No not dying just wanted me to scratch her foot!

Leaning her cues everyday. I love her but man is she is a funny creature.

Make sure you put in the groundwork before you ever tie balloons around your horse's neck.

I wanted to take a photo of Tivoli wearing our balloons to celebrate 2,000 followers, clicking follow to see what we're up to each day.

This is how I do it.

Each summer we pack up our favorite breakers, throw in a few made horses, and head for the hills.

This is Kosciusko national Park, Australia.

OLD pinnibar track. It blows my mind that people used to drive this in a four-wheel drive.
While it looks fairly tame on camera..... I assure you this is steep.

It's really important when walking up hills. That you don't blow up your horse's hamstrings. These horses get 10 to 15 steps and get a stop.

Anytime they ask for a stop. They get a stop.

Slow and smooth and smooth is fast.

But I do like the phrase. Wet saddle blankets. Make good horses.
- So long as you make your saddle blankets wet the right way! With structured, thoughtful work.

We epically failed on Dolly's first attempt at wearing a roller,. Not because she wasn't prepared properly but because my roller was too short!

Not used to having such a large barreled lass.

Round two!!!

Will we be more successful???
This girth is extra long.

A short unedited section of fins learning to tie session.
This is such an important aspect of starting horses.

Horses that cannot tie up are dangerous. Horses that do not understand how to give to pressure and lead forward, often end up hurting themselves or their owners.

Once a horse learns how to lower their head and lead forward, the next step is the tie-up wall.

Finn is wearing a big thick tie up head color made of seat belt material.
He's long Rope goes through a blocker tie ring. Which provides enough resistance for him to feel pressure but allows him to move backwards if he feels he needs to.

It's really important with this work that horses are allowed to make the mistake of going backwards before they are corrected by doing the opposite.
Lead forward!
