As with anything in dog training, you must understand what a dog is being reinforced by in order to make changes to habits and behaviours.

Ludlow here, is driven by my attention - it doesn't matter whether I was to sternly mark "no!" in an attempt to 'reprimand' him or tell him something like "it's ok bub I'm right here" - these are the things most people would do, but unfortunately all you are doing is reinforcing the behaviour because at it's core - what you are doing is giving the pup attention, and that is what the pup is reinforced by, so the behaviour continues/worsens.

For many dogs, attention is attention, it doesn't matter whether you, the human, deem it as "punishment" because your voice is stern - it's the dog that gets to decide whether they like it or not, not you.

This little boy is next level, in a GREAT way! So lovely seeing him grow and more of his crazy little personality reveal itself.

Since I've introduced Ludlow I've had a bunch of people ask where his name is from.

Many of my animals are named after tv shows/movies I like (most of my animals names are from Buffy hahaha). 🩸🦇

Glory was named after the sassy demon in Buffy - "She is ruthless and uncaring about the consequences of her actions, even if it means destroying the world. Also see: superhuman speed." - v accurate. Glory truly has a streak of evil in her. She also has the same hairstyle as her namesake 🤣

Obviously, Ferris was named after the one and only Ferris Bueller - "He's known for his charm, his ability to manipulate situations to his advantage, and his infectious enthusiasm for life." - do I need to comment!? 🥲

With Ludlow though - I went a different way. I didn't have any names lined up like I did previously.

One of the reasons I started looking into springers in the first place is because my mama has always loved them. I remember when I was young asking mum what her favourite dog breed was and she would say springer spaniel - my parents are from England and my mum loved seeing the springers work.

So I wanted to pay homage to that a bit and looked into a name that had some link to my mum/parents and their English heritage/their time back in England (after all, they are English Springer Spaniels!).

Mum and Dad's first home together back home was on "Ludlow Close" in Chippenham and as soon as I considered "Ludlow" I knew it was the one.

Funnily enough, mum also noticed immediately how solid Luddy was, and how alike he is to the old fashioned springers she used to see back in England (which is also what Steve at Glastonpark likes to breed, but was particularly evident in this pairing). So it all just makes sense.

So bloody proud of this team. I've known Zelda since she was a baby - she came to puppy class, she stayed at my home for day trains while I used her for online puppy content, and then we started a full program shortly after.

Zelda's owner Lauren has been an absolute hero in this scenario and has put in SO MUCH work. And it hasn't always been easy - Z isn't an easy dog.

She's a pushy, bold, exuberant young rottie who wants what she wants and doesn't let much stand in her way to getting it 🤣 you can read about their journey on her insta at .zee.therottie - there were tears 😭

But, the change in Z since our last session is insane. The change in Lauren's handling skills since last session is impressive.

Lauren & Z are exactly the type of clients I love to have. They rock up to groups, they do the work, and Lauren asks me questions whenever she doesn't fully understand something. Which is why they are reaping the benefits now.

We still have a way to go, but just wanted to celebrate this awesome team ❤️

About Us

The Holistic Hound is a local dog training business servicing the Perth Metro Region and specialising in behaviour modification. We take a holistic approach to dog training and aim to change the way you communicate and live with your dog in order to improve the freedom you have together in real world situations. My name is Lorri and I run the Holistic Hound - I’ve worked and had experience with dogs full time since 2013 and owned multiple rescues with behavioural issues myself. I was frustrated with the lack of support given by trainers as well as the lack of flexibility when it came to helping the individual dog at hand. After studying modern, balanced dog training methods and techniques in depth I now use that knowledge to help others who may be in the same position I was. We cater for all breeds, sizes and ages and attack any problem you may be struggling with. We offer private, in-home sessions to rehabilitate your dogs issues where they happen, and we don’t just train your dog within the private session, we teach you the essentials to be able to continue with a whole new lifestyle and language to ensure improvement of your dogs issues, complete with full support whenever you need it both during the training and for the dogs lifetime thereafter. We are constantly learning and expanding our knowledge when it comes to dogs and can promise that we will try any method that is best for the dog in front of us (every dog is different!), and give you all the information and instruction we possibly have to be able to work you through any struggles you’re experiencing. Our objective is to provide a professional and supportive environment for you and your dog to thrive as a team. Feel free to contact us if you are experiencing behavioural problems with your dog, for more information on the services we offer, suburbs we cover and prices of our private sessions contact us below or via this page!
