SA Native Animal Rescue - SANAR SANAR is a wildlife rescue group in South Australia, working with the community to rescue, rehabilitate, and release native animals. Need help with an animal?

Contact us via Messenger SA Native Animal Rescue strives to rescue, rehabilitate, and release native animals, working with local vets, animal shelters, and experts to provide the best care for each animal. SANAR is a wildlife rescue group in South Australia, founded by passionate wildlife carers. We have many experienced carers across SA who volunteer their time and energy to rescue and care for i

njured, sick, and orphaned animals. We have carers that can rescue and care for birds (including birds of prey), possums, koalas, kangaroos, echidnas, and reptiles (excluding snakes). Many species require around the clock care, including feeds, toileting and even emergency rescues so our volunteers are also donating their sleep (or lack of) to care for these amazing animals. Our volunteers supply their own equipment, use their own vehicles to transport and care for the wildlife in their own homes. We appreciate all donations, whether financial, donation of services or donation of equipment. Please send us a message if you want to make a donation towards the care of our wildlife.

We are well into the spring baby season now and this wind will cause havoc with the little babies still in the nest as well as ones learning to perch or fly.

In the last couple of weeks we have had baby magpies, ravens, lorikeets, ducklings, pigeons, noisy miners and masked lapwings (a.k.a. plovers) all coming in so we have definitely started spring by jumping in the deep end!

Keep an eye out today and reach out for help if you find any young birds needing help. Remember its better to ask for advice rather than leave an injured or helpless animal to die.

Another amazing reunion last night! We had a little ringtail baby come in yesterday. He was in good condition, so we decided to try a reunion as soon as possible.
Our research and experience have shown that mum’s milk can stop lactating within a few days, as her body gradually adjusts to producing less milk after losing her baby.
We knew where the drey was, so when we arrived, mum was already out, probably looking for her baby.
In the video, you can see the baby climbing onto mum’s lower back and then into the pouch. Look at the side of mum’s body—you can see movement in her pouch, indicating there are more babies inside.

Found an injured animal?
Would you know what to do if you came across one in distress?
Don’t be caught unprepared.
The SA Native Animal Rescue Kit has everything you need to help until a rescuer arrives or until you can get it to help.
This is a small investment that makes a big difference & could save a life.

As we move into what carers call “wildlife trauma season” that busy time when animals are on the move, our native wildlife can sometimes find themselves in trouble. Whether it’s while you’re driving, walking, or even gardening at home, you might suddenly come across an animal in distress and wish you had the right supplies to help.
That’s exactly why the SA Native Animal Wildlife Rescue Kit was created.
It’s a simple, ready to go kit designed to be kept in your car or cupboard, giving you the confidence and equipment to safely assist a sick, injured or orphaned native animal until help arrives or prior to you being able to transport the animal to the vet or a permitted wildlife carer.
Inside, you’ll find:
✅ Essential rescue items!
✅ Easy to follow instructions and a booklet, the booklet also includes contact information!
✅ Practical tools to keep both you and the animal safe!
Think of it like a first aid kit – but for wildlife. Every animal lover should have one, and there’s never been a better time to invest in one than now, & these also make a perfect gift for somebody & it's the gift that keeps on giving as the proceeds go back into our rescue supporting our work.

💚 If you love our wildlife, please consider investing in one of these rescue kits you could save a life. SANAR wildlife rescue kits are available on our website find out more.⬇️

Winter looks like its going out with a bang and they birds are already getting a head start on spring! These babies have all come in over the past two days and more will likely be blown out the trees in the coming days.

If you find a baby:

🟢Keep it warm: for small or wet babies, a blanket is not enough. They need an external heat source like a water bottle filled with hot tap water and wrapped in a towel

🔵Contact a vet, a wildlife carer or rescue as soon as possible, they require specialised care and the sooner they get into care, the better

🔴Do not give them food or water. Different bird have different and specific diets. It is also dangerous to feed babies and it can cause potentially lethal complications

This baby lorikeet just came into care in SANAR, a very lucky baby who was seen on the ground by a person who took it from the ground and kept it warm till it came to us. Keeping babies warm is the only and most important thing
a member of the public can do for any animal that is found, and then call a wildlife organisation or take it to a vet.

Winter, although quieter on the rescue front, can be a hard time of year for wildlife carers. We get less calls than we do in spring and summer but the calls we do get are for skinny, sick and injured animals who have a might lower success rate of recovery and rehabilitation. The majority of animals the come through the rescue are unable to be saved, some as literally dying as they come into our care, others need to be euthanised so that they are no longer suffering. All the death and suffering is really hard on our carers, and at times it can seem that we can do nothing to help; these animals aren’t cute babies that we can watch grow and develop, they are adults: scared, aggressive, fighting against us however they can. No wonder it is disheartening.

So this post is for our carers, who turn up to every rescue knowing that there is likely to be no happy ending yet keep at it to lessen the suffering however they can. We see you: we know it’s hard, and can be absolutely devastating at times but the difference you make for every animal is immeasurable. Please reach out if you need to talk, or to vent about the seemingly thankless work we do. We thank you. The wildlife thanks you.

Please make sure you use appropriate netting for your fruit and veg, getting calls for net entrapment is always devastating. The range of injuries it can cause is horrific, strangulation, cutting circulation off to limbs, broken bones as they struggle to escape, cuts, and over time starvation. Black netting can also cause more issues as the colour acts as a camouflage and the birds are not able to see the netting and get caught in it more easily.

City of Adelaide please re-evaluate the netting on the trees in Leigh Street. They are not safe for wildlife.

Deadly for birds. Fatal for flying foxes.

That’s what cheap or poorly installed fruit tree netting really is.

Every year, native birds—like lorikeets, honeyeaters, currawongs—and flying foxes become tangled in garden netting. They struggle for hours or days, cutting deeper into their wings and limbs as they try to escape. Many die slowly from shock, strangulation, or starvation. Others are found too late to help.

Flying foxes in particular suffer horrific injuries—membranes torn, babies clinging on as their mothers hang helpless. And all for what? A few pieces of fruit?

There’s a better way.

✅ Use wildlife-safe netting—the kind you can’t poke your finger through or 5mm square.

✅ Install it tightly over a frame so nothing can get trapped.

❌ Avoid cheap throw-over mesh. It’s dangerous and often illegal in some areas.

Protect your fruit and protect our wildlife. Because no bird or bat should die for a backyard harvest.
