Long before modern bully breeds took shape, Scotland had its own powerful and mysterious dog: the Blue Paul Terrier.

This now-extinct breed was prominent in the 18th and 19th centuries, especially around the port town of Kirkintilloch. It was favored by sailors and working-class communities for its strength, endurance, and strong loyalty.

The Blue Paul was a muscular, medium-sized terrier with a broad chest, sturdy legs, and a short coat in shades of steel-blue or brindle. Its large head and powerful jaws reflected its use in blood sports like bull-baiting and dog fighting, which were common at the time.

Historical accounts describe it as a strategic fighter, relying more on agility, grip, and focus than constant aggression. Some reports even suggest it fought almost silently, adding to its reputation.

Its origins remain uncertain. One theory links it to seafarers, possibly connected to Paul Jones bringing dogs from the Caribbean or Americas. Another suggests the name came from “Blue Poll,” referring to its coat. Neither theory is confirmed.

Despite its fighting background, the Blue Paul Terrier was said to be affectionate and devoted at home, valued as both a guard dog and companion.

By the late 19th century, the breed disappeared due to the ban on blood sports, the rise of other terriers, and the lack of formal breeding records. Today, it survives only in historical accounts, though it may have influenced breeds like the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier.
