Available for adoption: Dennis!

Dennis is a 5 year old Curly Coat Retriever who came to us after Animal Welfare League reached out for support.

Originally found as a stray, Dennis came to us struggling with dog reactivity, over-arousal, and difficulty settling within everyday environments. Since starting training, we’ve been focusing heavily on helping him build calmness, neutrality, engagement, and clearer communication skills through structured training and fulfilment.

Throughout his training package and rehab journey, Dennis has been working on marker training, leash skills, place training, recall, crate training, and learning how to better regulate himself around other dogs and distractions. Since being in our care, Dennis has been able to come off of behavioural medication under the guidance of our vet. One of the biggest wins has been seeing him begin to calmly coexist around dogs without feeling the need to react.

Dennis is a loving, intelligent dog with a huge working drive and a love for learning. Like many working breeds, he thrives when given structure, purpose, and appropriate outlets to channel his energy.

He will suit an active and committed home that enjoys training, adventure, and continuing the work we’ve started with him. In the right environment, Dennis is going to make an incredibly rewarding companion. He is ready for a life of adventure!

Could Dennis be the right fit for you?

Sheldon is the kind of dog everyone dreams of owning. A beautiful Golden Retriever who adores people, loves connection and has the sweetest nature.

But for his owner, life with Sheldon had become overwhelming.

Whilst pregnant and with a partner working FIFO, even simple things felt hard. Guests could not come over because Sheldon became impossible to manage around people. The excitement was constant. Jumping, pushing into people, struggling to listen and becoming so over aroused that the whole environment felt chaotic.

Walks were difficult too. Sheldon was so strong on leash that they had stopped walking him regularly altogether. Living in Roxby Downs for much of his early life also meant he had very limited exposure to the outside world, people and busy environments during important developmental stages. As a result, everyday life felt huge and exciting to him.

And when a baby is on the way, those behaviours stop feeling cute very quickly.

During Sheldon’s 2 week Stay and Learn, we focused heavily on mindset, leash skills and neutrality around people. We worked on helping him regulate his excitement instead of feeding into it, creating structure around greetings and teaching him how to move calmly through the environment. We also worked on building leash skills with a pram, neutrality towards different baby noises and the ability to maintain thresholds and positions whilst someone tends to a makeshift baby, creating clear pictures for him to understand prior to baby's arrival.

Seeing Sheldon able to remain calm, engaged and responsive around people was a huge shift. His owners now have the tools to continue building on that progress at home so they can confidently welcome this next chapter of life with him alongside them.

We wish them all the best as they move through this next exciting chapter of their lives as a family!

If your dog’s excitement is starting to control your life, our Stay and Learn programs are designed to help you regain confidence, clarity and calm. Reach out to begin your training journey.

We’ll be doing our thang, okay! 👌

We never take for granted the trust our clients place in us.

Being invited into such an important part of someone’s life and helping create calmer, more enjoyable relationships with their dogs and even just being a home away from home for your pets is something we feel incredibly honoured to do.

From the hard moments to the wins, the adventures, the breakthroughs, the slobbery kisses and the everyday progress, we genuinely love what we do and the dogs we get to share it with.

Living with Murphy had become challenging for his owners.

Jumping, obsessive licking, barking in the backyard and constantly seeking interaction had become overwhelming.

Murphy absolutely loves people and wants to be involved in everything, but new environments and stimulation were difficult for him to process. Underneath all of the excitement was a nervous dog who struggled to regulate himself. The more overwhelmed he became, the more intense his behaviours looked.

The biggest challenge was that Murphy did not know how to self settle. He was always searching for interaction, stimulation or access to his people.

With a baby due in October, his owners knew they needed to get ahead now rather than wait until life became even busier and more stressful.

During Murphy’s Stay and Learn, our focus was mindset and helping him feel more capable in the world around him. We worked on teaching him how to genuinely relax, not just physically stop moving. Crate training became a priority so he had a safe place to decompress and switch off instead of constantly seeking engagement from the environment around him.

We also focused heavily on calm engagement and listening skills, helping Murphy understand that calm behaviour is what gains him access to the things he wants. Around people, dogs and new environments, we worked on neutrality and impulse control so he could move through the world with less intensity and more confidence.

With a baby on the way, we also began conditioning baby noises and creating positive associations around the sounds and situations he is likely to experience once the baby arrives.

One of the biggest transformations was seeing Murphy begin to settle emotionally instead of constantly bouncing between excitement and overwhelm.

So many dogs who appear “crazy” or over the top are actually struggling to regulate themselves in stimulating environments.

If your dog struggles to settle, becomes overwhelmed easily or feels exhausting to manage around visitors and in public, there is absolutely a way forward. Our Stay and Learn programs are designed to create calm, clarity and real lifestyle change for both dogs and their owners.

Lainey is one of our Training and Daycare clients who has been consistently working with us since June last year, and watching her journey over the past 11 months has been incredibly rewarding.

Lainey’s guardians first reached out through our Day Assessment service to gather further insight into some predation behaviours occurring at home, particularly surrounding their sheep and cat, where Lainey had been chasing and pinning them down. They also wanted to assess her suitability for daycare and social environments.

As a German Shorthaired Pointer, Lainey is genetically bred to work. GSPs are highly driven, intelligent and energetic dogs with strong natural instincts surrounding scent work, hunting and movement. Without appropriate outlets, guidance and fulfilment, these genetics can often begin presenting in ways that are challenging within the home environment.

Over the past year, Lainey has worked with us consistently through our Day Train program while navigating adolescence, building confidence and learning how to channel her drive into more appropriate and fulfilling outlets. We’ve focused heavily on crate training, place training for in home management, engagement, off-leash recall, neutrality and providing structured fulfilment through activities such as scent work and flirt pole to help meet her needs in a productive way.

Lainey has come so far!

She regularly attends daycare as an absolute social butterfly, confidently interacting within our social groups.

To further support her fulfilment and lifestyle, her guardians also utilise our Canine Club services, with Lainey joining us for our Forest, Trail and Beach adventure days, giving her the opportunity to explore and enjoy nature as GSP's do, in a safe, structured and enriching way.

Lainey’s progress is such a reflection of the dedication, consistency and effort her guardians have poured into her over the past year.

We truly adore her and look forward to her sessions each week!

Dogs are incredibly good at learning patterns.

And for many reactive dogs, the walk around the block stops being “just a walk” long before owners realise it.

Same streets.
Same corners.
Same barking dog behind the fence.
Same house where another dog rushes the gate.
Same flood of adrenaline every single day.

Eventually, your dog isn’t even reacting to what’s in front of them anymore. They’re reacting to what they believe is about to happen next.

That’s why some dogs start the walk already scanning. Already pulling. Already tense before a trigger has even appeared.

Because the neighbourhood itself has become part of the emotional pattern.

For so many owners, walks slowly become something they dread. You leave the house hoping today might feel different, only to spend the entire walk managing reactions, apologising to people, tightening the leash, and feeling like your dog is completely disconnected from you.

Meanwhile, your dog is stuck in a cycle of anticipation, over-arousal, frustration, and rehearsal.

And the hardest part?
Most people think more exposure to the exact same picture will eventually “fix it.”

But nervous systems learn through repetition too.

Sometimes progress comes from changing the entire experience. Slowing life down, breaking patterns, creating fulfilment outside of the walk, helping your dog stop living in a constant state of expectation and environmental fixation.

Because reactive dogs don’t just learn behaviours but create a habit around the experience too.

This past week, little Tallulah, the Mini Dachshund joined us for a Day Assessment.

As a young puppy, Tallulah’s guardians wanted to gain further insight into some behaviours they were noticing early on, including crying in the crate, vocalising when left alone or when her owner showered, over excitement during play, destructive behaviours such as digging, leash manners and play with their other dog.

But more importantly, their goal was simple:
to help guide Tallulah into becoming the happiest, healthiest and most fulfilled version of herself possible! Gosh, we love that!

And honestly, that’s one of the biggest benefits of our Day Assessment service.

Not every assessment is about serious behavioural concerns. Sometimes it’s about understanding the dog in front of you early enough to help shape the future you want with them.

Puppyhood and adolescence are such important developmental periods, and gaining insight into your dog’s genetics, drives, arousal levels, confidence, social skills and emotional responses early on can make such a difference long term.

Throughout our Day Assessments, our trainers observe your dog across different environments and situations to better understand the “who, the why, and the when” behind their behaviour. We assess things such as engagement, sociability, environmental confidence, handling, leash skills, arousal, responses to people, dogs and other concerns, as well as their overall mindset.

From there, we provide detailed feedback, recommendations moving forward, and a comprehensive written report designed to give owners clarity, direction and support moving forward with their dog.

Because sometimes the best thing you can do for your dog isn’t waiting for problems to arise, it’s learning how to guide them before they do!

Is Norman just what you need? 😉

Approximately 1.5 years ago, Norman arrived into our care alongside 3 other young Rottweilers. They came to us lacking confidence, socialisation, stability and understanding of the world around them.

Since then, Norman has come such a long way.

After taking time to settle in and build confidence, Norman was adopted into a home, however due to changes in circumstance, he recently found himself back in our care through absolutely no fault of his own. Once again, Norm is looking for his forever family! Could that be you!?

Norman is approximately 2–3 years old and while he can initially be a little nervous, once he has built a relationship of trust with you, he is much more confident. He spends time in our social groups, is fine with other dogs and may possibly be suitable for a home with cats.

What Norman needs now is someone willing to guide him with calm leadership, structure and consistency, someone who understands that nervous dogs don’t need fixing, they need patience, clarity and someone willing to help them feel safe.

Due to his size and occasional nervous tendencies, we believe him to be better suited to a home without young children, with older children suiting him best.

If you think you could be the fresh start Norman has been waiting for, please complete our Adoption Application Form through the link below.

And if you can’t adopt, a share goes a long way in helping the right person find him!

Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at Take the Lead 💐

Today is about celebrating the women who do it all... the mums, step mums, dog mums, grandmas, and mother figures who fill homes with love, patience, comfort, and care.

To the mums packing the treats before walks, the mums running businesses and households, tackling the never ending to do list and mental load of life as a parent, waking up early for toilet breaks and training sessions with their dogs, school runs and everything in between… this one’s for you.

We know how much love goes into caring for both your families and your dogs, and we hope today brings you a chance to slow down, feel appreciated, and soak up a little of the love you give out every single day. They often say that as a mum, you can’t pour from an empty cup… but I’m sure so many other mums would agree that somehow, you still do, every single day. 🤍

Let’s hope today is about slowing down for a moment and filling your own cup too.

Whether your Mother’s Day includes breakfast in bed, a beach walk with your dog, or simply a quiet cuddle on the couch, we hope it’s a beautiful one 💛
