What’s the Difference Between DEET and Natural Repellents?
What’s the Difference Between DEET and Natural Repellents?
You’re standing in the supermarket aisle, comparing mozzie repellents and feeling stuck.
One’s loaded with chemicals you can’t pronounce.
Another claims to be “natural,” but you’ve tried those before — and still ended up covered in bites.
Then there’s that one with the eye-watering smell that clings to your clothes for hours.
You want something that works — without leaving your skin stinging, sticky, or smelling like bug spray all day.
But finding a repellent that actually protects and feels good to use? That’s a lot harder than it should be.
We get it. We've been there too.
So let’s break it down. What’s actually in those bottles? And what should you really be looking for?
What is DEET?
DEET (short for N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide) was developed in the 1940s for use by the military. It’s effective at repelling mozzies, no doubt — but it also comes with a long list of drawbacks.
🧪 The Downsides of DEET
❌ Can cause stinging or burning, especially on sensitive or broken skin
❌ Strong smell and greasy texture
❌ Often combined with alcohol and synthetic fragrances, which can dry out and damage the skin barrier
❌ Not recommended for babies under 12 months
If your child has sensitive skin, eczema, or allergies, using DEET daily is like putting petrol on a fire.
What About Natural Repellents?
Natural repellents sound like the safer option. And they can be — but here’s the catch: not all natural repellents actually work.
Most natural products are sprays made with essential oils diluted in water. While they smell nice, they usually:
• Evaporate quickly — especially with sweat, movement, or heat
• Not long lasting — usually only lasting 30-60 mins
• Might contain alcohol or high concentrations of essential oils that irritate sensitive skin
• And, most importantly, they haven’t been proven to actually work by the APVMA.
It’s no wonder you're left frustrated. You’re doing the right thing — but the mozzies don’t care.
DEET vs Natural Repellents: A Quick Comparison
DEET is like bug-proof body armour — strong, but sticky, smelly, and harsh on skin. Most natural sprays are more like perfume: they smell nice but wear off fast and often don’t work.
So… What’s the Smarter Option?
The best of both worlds: a natural repellent that’s actually proven to work.
Here’s a checklist of what to look for:
✅ APVMA ApprovalIf it’s not approved by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA), it hasn’t been clinically tested to work.
🧠 Like a seatbelt that hasn’t been crash-tested — not worth the risk.
✔ ️ Good Riddance is fully APVMA-approved.
✅ Cream-Based FormulaCreams stay on the skin longer than sprays. They don’t evaporate, and they don’t sting.
🧴 Think sunscreen vs body spray.
✔️ Our cream formula gives lasting protection — even in hot, humid climates.
✅ Safe for Sensitive Skin & KidsCheck for baby-safe and eczema-friendly labelling. Many "natural" options still contain potential irritants.
🧼 Gentle enough to share — even with eczema-prone kids.
✔ ️ Our Sensitive range is safe from 3 months old — and free from alcohol, synthetic fragrances, and parabens.
✅ Clinically Proven Essential OilsNot all essential oils repel mozzies. Look for ones like lemon-scented tea tree, citronella, and lavender — in clinically tested blends.

✔️ We spent two years formulating ours — and tested them in Kakadu and the Top End.
The Bottom Line
At the end of the day, you don’t need to choose between harsh chemicals and weak repellents.
With Good Riddance, you can have both: peace of mind and real protection — for you, your kids, and your skin.
From One Parent to Another...
“I use this in my Family Daycare service — no bites on the children! I have 6 kids, 1 with eczema and 2 with very sensitive skin. It’s the only mozzie repellent I will use, and I’ve recommended it to all the children’s parents too.”— Sharon, Darwin ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
