Good lunging is not about making a horse tired.
It is about communication, observation, and correct groundwork.

When done properly, lunging can help improve balance, rhythm, responsiveness, and overall understanding between horse and handler. When done incorrectly, it can create confusion, stress, and unnecessary strain on the horse’s body.

Understanding lunging means knowing

✔ How to position yourself safely
✔ How to read a horse’s body language
✔ How to encourage calm and correct movement
✔ When to apply pressure and when to release it

Every horse responds differently depending on their training, confidence, and environment. That is why technique and timing matter.

This is why education matters.

At The Australian Equine Institute, our nationally recognised
ACM20221 Certificate II in Horse Care
ACM30821 Certificate III in Horse Care

help students develop practical horse handling and groundwork skills that support safer and more effective horsemanship.

Because good groundwork creates better horses and more confident handlers.

No matter how long someone has been around horses, there is always more to understand.

Different horses. Different behaviours. Different needs.

What works for one horse may not work for another, which is why good horse care is built on education, observation, and the willingness to keep learning.

From feeding and daily care to safe handling and recognising changes in behaviour, the smallest details often make the biggest difference to a horse’s wellbeing.

At The Australian Equine Institute, our nationally recognised
ACM20221 Certificate II in Horse Care
ACM30821 Certificate III in Horse Care

help students develop practical knowledge that supports safer, smarter, and more confident horse care.

Because great horse people are not the ones who know everything.
They are the ones willing to keep learning.

Case Study: From One Horse to a Bigger Goal

When Ava first enrolled in the Certificate III in Horse Care, she only had experience with one horse. Her own.

She knew her mare’s habits, routines, and personality inside out, but stepping into broader horse care felt intimidating. Different feeding needs, unfamiliar behaviours, and handling horses outside her comfort zone made her realise there was still a lot to learn.

Instead of treating the course like a checklist, Ava approached it like a challenge to expand her understanding beyond what she already knew. She began volunteering on weekends at a local agistment property where she was exposed to horses of different ages, temperaments, and workloads.

What surprised her most was how much horse care changed from horse to horse. One horse needed careful feed management to maintain condition, another required close monitoring for behavioural stress, while another taught her the importance of safe handling and clear boundaries.

As her confidence grew, so did her independence. She started taking initiative around the property, helping organise routines, checking horses before feeds, and assisting with basic health care tasks.

By the end of the qualification, Ava said the biggest shift was not in her riding, but in her mindset.

“I stopped thinking about horses as just my hobby and started understanding the responsibility behind caring for them properly.”

Today, Ava continues to build experience in the equine industry while working toward long term goals in horse management and coaching.

At The Australian Equine Institute, we love seeing students turn curiosity into capability through practical education and real world experience.

Case Study: Turning Curiosity Into Capability

When Emily first enrolled in the Certificate II in Horse Care, she had only been around horses for a short time. Her family did not come from an equine background and most of what she knew had come from watching others at a local riding centre. What she did have was curiosity. She asked questions about everything from feeding routines to how horses communicated through their ears, posture, and movement.

Early in the course, Emily realised horse care involved far more than grooming and riding. Learning about stable management, risk awareness, and daily observation opened her eyes to how much responsibility sits behind good horse care. Tasks that once seemed simple became opportunities to pay attention to detail. She began noticing changes in behaviour, small differences in movement, and how routine affected the horses she worked with.

One of Emily’s assessors commented that her greatest improvement was not speed but awareness. She started documenting feeding patterns, asking why certain practices were used, and applying what she learned each day at the riding centre where she volunteered.

By the end of the course, Emily was no longer the student quietly watching from the side. She had become someone trusted to help with daily care and preparation of horses. The experience gave her confidence that working with horses was not just an interest but something she could build a future around.

For Emily, the biggest lesson was simple. Knowledge creates confidence, and confidence leads to better care for horses.

This is the kind of growth we aim to support at The Australian Equine Institute. Students learning step by step, building practical skills, and developing the understanding that horses rely on every day.

Hard Feed Isn’t One Size Fits All

It is easy to think more feed means a better-fed horse.
But when it comes to hard feed, more is not always better. It is about feeding the right type, in the right amount, for the right horse.

Every horse has different needs based on age, workload, condition, and environment. What works for one horse can cause problems for another.

Understanding hard feed means knowing

✔ When a horse actually needs it
✔ How to balance it with quality roughage
✔ How to introduce feeds safely
✔ How to avoid overfeeding and digestive issues

Feeding correctly supports energy, condition, and overall health. Feeding incorrectly can lead to behavioural issues, weight problems, and serious health risks.

This is why education matters.

At The Australian Equine Institute, our nationally recognised
ACM20221 Certificate II in Horse Care
ACM30821 Certificate III in Horse Care

teach students how to make informed feeding decisions that support horse wellbeing every day.

Because good feeding is not about more. It is about understanding.

Confidence Around Horses Comes From Understanding

Working with horses is not about being fearless.
It is about knowing what you are doing and why it matters.

Horses are powerful animals with instincts, communication signals, and routines that shape how they respond to people. When handlers understand these signals, everything becomes safer and calmer for both horse and human.

Learning horse care means developing skills such as

✔ Safe handling and positioning around horses
✔ Reading body language and behaviour
✔ Preparing horses correctly for daily work
✔ Creating routines that reduce stress and risk

These are not skills people are simply born with. They are learned through education and hands on experience.

At The Australian Equine Institute, our nationally recognised
ACM20221 Certificate II in Horse Care
ACM30821 Certificate III in Horse Care

focus on building confidence through practical knowledge and real world horsemanship.

Because confident horse care starts with understanding.
