Feeding Isn’t Just Routine—It’s a Relationship
It’s easy to think feeding horses is all about hay and hard feeds.
But what, when, and how you feed can shape more than just their health—it shapes their trust in you.
From understanding roughage needs to spotting nutritional red flags,
feeding well is about listening to your horse’s body and adjusting with care.
It’s not just science—it’s horsemanship.
🌾 Learn how to fuel your horse the right way, every day.
It’s a vital part of our nationally recognised Certificate II and III in Horse Care—and one of the most practical skills you’ll carry with you for life.

Hay isn’t just hay—choosing the right type can make a huge difference to your horse’s health, energy, and even behaviour.
Here’s what to consider:
✔️ Nutritional Needs – Is your horse a laid-back paddock ornament or a high-performance athlete? The type of work they do determines whether they need a low-sugar grass hay or a richer legume like lucerne.
✔️ Health Conditions – Got a laminitic pony? Or a horse prone to weight gain? Low-NSC hay like teff or mature grass hay might be your best bet.
✔️ Storage & Smell Check – Hay should be dry, clean, and sweet-smelling. If it’s dusty or mouldy—don’t risk it.
✔️ Consistency is Key – Changing hay types suddenly can cause digestive upset. Make any changes slowly.
Your horse’s hay is the foundation of their diet. Getting it right matters more than any fancy supplement.
💡Want to learn more? This is exactly the kind of practical knowledge covered in our horse care qualifications.
Let’s feed them right from the start.

CASE STUDY: From Family Life to Equine Life – Melissa’s Story
Age: 42
Background: Stay-at-home mum / part-time admin assistant
Course Completed: ACM30821 Certificate III in Horse Care
After years of raising three kids and juggling part-time admin work, Melissa knew it was time to do something for herself. With her youngest finishing high school and more time opening up in her day, she decided to follow a passion she’d had since childhood—horses.
Though Melissa had some riding experience as a teenager, she’d never had the opportunity to pursue it seriously. When she came across the Australian Equine Institute’s Certificate II in Horse Care, it felt like the perfect fit—affordable, flexible, and built for people ready to start fresh.
“The course gave me the confidence I needed to step into the equine industry,” Melissa says. “It didn’t matter that I hadn’t worked with horses professionally before—everything was explained clearly, and I could go at my own pace.”
Now, Melissa is volunteering at a local equine therapy centre with plans to start her own horse care service.
Why It Worked:
✔️ Self-paced online learning with support
✔️ Built-in confidence boosters through practical units
✔️ A community of like-minded learners—many also making big life changes
✔️ Clear pathways to real industry roles
“I never thought I’d be starting a new chapter at 42, but this course reminded me that it’s never too late to chase what lights you up.”

🐴 Is Your Handling Routine Building Trust—or Tension?
Handling a horse isn’t just about getting from A to B—it’s about building trust, setting clear boundaries, and keeping both you and your horse safe.
But here’s what we see all the time:
🚫 Rushed groundwork
🚫 Poor lead rope habits
🚫 Mixed signals that confuse rather than guide
These small mistakes can lead to reactivity, resistance—or worse, injury.
Both our ACM20221 Certificate II and ACM30821 Certificate III in Horse Care cover safe horse handling from the ground up. Whether you’re learning the basics or refining your skills, these nationally recognised courses teach the right way to approach, lead, tie, and communicate clearly with your horse.
💬 “I thought I was doing it right—until I learned how much I was missing. Now my horse is calmer, and I feel more in control.”
Sometimes it’s the smallest adjustments that create the biggest breakthroughs.

Meet Ella, a recent graduate of our ACM30821 Certificate III in Horse Care.
When she first started the course, Ella described her gelding as “difficult.” He refused to be caught, pulled back when tied, and seemed anxious for no clear reason.
“I thought he was just a bit stubborn, maybe even spoiled,” Ella shared. “But after starting the horse behaviour unit, I realised I’d been missing the signs of stress completely.”
As she progressed through the course, Ella learned how to read subtle body language, identify environmental triggers, and respond with calm, consistent handling.
The change? Immediate.
🐴 Her gelding went from tense and reactive to relaxed and willing—just by making small changes based on what she learned.
💬 “I used to take his behaviour personally. Now I see it as communication—and we’re finally working with each other instead of against.”
Horse behaviour isn’t just about training—it’s about understanding.
And once you start paying attention, everything changes.
Grooming isn’t just about making your horse look show-ready—it's a key part of keeping their skin and coat healthy.
But did you know…
🪥 Over-grooming can strip away natural oils that protect the skin.
💨 Inconsistent routines can lead to build-up, irritation, or missed signs of skin issues.
🐴 Neglecting certain areas (like girth lines or under the mane) can cause long-term discomfort.
It’s the little things that make a big difference.
💭 Ever had a gut feeling something was off with your horse—but didn’t know what to do?
That was Emily’s story—until she enrolled in ACM20221 Certificate II in Horse Care.
After learning about equine behaviour and subtle signs of pain, she spotted early signs of a tooth issue in her mare—something she would’ve missed just a few months earlier.
🦷 A quick visit from the equine dentist confirmed it: sharp molars causing an ulcer in the mouth.
Now? Problem solved before it became serious—and painful.
💬 “It gave me confidence. Before, I second-guessed myself. Now I trust what I know.”
Knowledge saves time, money, and most importantly—your horse’s well-being.

Our Story
For many years recognised training in the Equine industry has been limited to a great extent to areas such as racing, breeding and coaching. Whilst these areas are vitally important for the sector and the ongoing success of the equine industry in Australia, the vast majority of participants in riding activities are leisure riders, recreational riders, show and amateur event competitors.
In 2007, members of Intercept Group Pty Ltd, a Registered Training Organisation that has been delivering training for over 19 years in many industry sectors, decided to commence development of a nationally recognised qualification designed to fill the obvious gap in the Equine training sector. This was bought about after many discussions and requests from Club members and riders from various associations and disciplines.
The Certificate III in Horsemanship (Riding, Handling & Behaviour) began with thorough industry consultation. Many industry experts were involved in the selection of content, format of delivery and ensuring that all material is relevant and up to date. It was Nationally Accredited in 2011 after rigorous auditing and compliance checks.
The Australian Equine Institute was born in 2012 as a division of Intercept Group Pty Ltd and the course was released. It has become a great success with participants from as young as 15 years to more senior riders taking the opportunity to gain more knowledge and skills that have enabled them to build more confidence in their handling and riding skills, and get more enjoyment form their riding activities.
Our course is Nationally Accredited & Recognised www.training.gov.au (10135NAT).
It is currently recognised in many Australian states for credits towards Certificates of Education (QCE, VCE, SA, NT & WACE). A great start to a future career in the Equine industry.
