Why is it crucial for a licensed, experienced carer to provide care for injured or orphaned wildlife?

Australian wildlife require specialised care, including species-specific food, to survive and grow. Handling and keeping them can cause extreme stress that can be fatal.
Possessing a wild animal can pose a health risk to yourself and others in your household.

In Queensland, it is illegal to possess native animals without appropriate training and licenses, with fines of up to $50,000 and imprisonment of up to one year applicable.

What steps should you take if you find an injured or orphaned animal? Contact MI Wildlife Rescue or a veterinarian.
If safe to do so, wrap the joey in something warm and keep in a quiet place.
This is not an opportunity for photographs.
Refrain from attempting to feed or provide the animal with water.

Follow the advice provided by the rescue hotline (0457 634 732).

Here on our island, weโ€™re lucky to be surrounded by incredible native wildlife. There are many benefits of island living, but to keep the place great, we must live responsibly. 75% of the island is national park, making our wildlife populations more concentrated and our ecosystems more fragile. Due to this, the effects of common household products like rodenticides are magnified; A single poisoned rat can harm multiple native species.

Using rat poison around your home might seem like a quick fix โ€” but the impact can be deadly for our ๐ฉ๐ž๐ญ๐ฌ and ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐˜„๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฑ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ฒ. When rats or mice consume poison, they donโ€™t die right away; predators like hawks, owls and even our pets often catch these sick rodents and as a result, they ingest the poison too. This poison can lead to internal bleeding, neurological issues and often a slow and painful death.

๐Ÿถ ๐—ฃ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜€ like dogs and cats are also at serious risk if they ingest bait or a contaminated animal.

Possums are curious, nocturnal, and often explore man-made areas seeking food and a safe homeโ€” making them especially vulnerable to bait laid around homes, sheds, and garages. Poisoned possums may suffer slow, painful deaths and leave orphaned young behind.

๐Ÿ’” These toxins stay in the food chain for days and affect more than just the intended target.

On Father's Day, we pay tribute to the wildlife volunteer dads who make a significant difference in the lives of animals. Dads who sacrifice their time for late-night animal care and responding to emergencies. To the dads who invest their time in constructing habitats, fundraising events, and participating in conservation activities. Your unwavering commitment and generosity are sincerely appreciated, and the animals are grateful for your kindness.

This is Alma, a little wallaby joey named after the location of her discovery. Weighing a mere 193g, she is exceptionally vulnerable.

Fortunately, she was found by a caring and responsible family who were going for a swim in the area at the time.

She is now under the care of trained, experienced, and registered carers from MI Wildlife Rescue Inc.

If you encounter an orphaned or injured baby animal in distress, what should you do?

The two most critical needs of a small animal in crisis are warmth and minimal stress. To achieve this, keep the animal in a dark, carefully wrapped environment using a pillowcase or soft material to simulate the mother's pouch. Maintain warmth, as they cannot regulate their body temperature and lose heat quickly. Utilize body heat where possible.

Refrain from feeding or providing water.

Immediately contact a wildlife care organisation or veterinarian. MI Wildlife Rescue Inc operates a 24/7 Rescue Hotline on 0457 634 732.

Avoid taking photos, and keep the animal wrapped. If a photo is unavoidable, take only one, without using a flash, as seen in Alma's photo.

It is essential to remember that this animal is in a fragile state, suffering from extreme trauma, and requires expert care.

At MI Wildlife Rescue Inc, we undertake specialised courses and maintain ongoing training and resources for the rescue and care of our island's wildlife.

๐ŸŒฟ Come See Us at Science Week! ๐Ÿฆ˜

Weโ€™re excited to be part of Science Week at Grab Eco Park this Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 2pm!

Bring the kids for some fun, hands-on activities, browse our merchandise stall, and have a chat with some of our incredible volunteer carers โ€“ you might even get to meet a few of our orphan joeys currently in care! ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’š

Every cent raised goes directly towards feeding and caring for our orphaned wildlife โ€“ not a single volunteer receives payment for their time.

๐Ÿ“ Find us at Grab Eco Park, located on Sooning Street, right beside The Old Island Nursery and across from Foodworks.

Weโ€™d love to see you there and share a little bit of what makes our work so special.
